New Jack Reacher

It's the newest book in the Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" books.

The sequel to the Tom Cruise "Jack Reacher" movie is supposed to be out in 2016. Maybe.

Poor Tom Cruise, he's at least 8 inches too short to fill Jack Reacher's shoes

Tom Cruise is probably less convincing as Jack Reacher than I would be. At least I'm taller than Cruise. :D

It's been awhile since I've read any of the books, but as I recall it, Reacher was described as being about 6'5", had a 50" chest (give or take) and weighs over 250lbs. Cruse misses it by about ten inches in height, chest size and 80lbs or more in weight.

Cruise as Reacher would be like remaking "Flight of the Intruder" with Cessna 172s.

My wife is a fan of the books. When she saw who was playing Reacher, she refused to watch it...We refer to Cruise as "Little Jackie Reacher" or "Mini Me Reacher"...I watched some the movie on Netflix. It seemed more like a comic book movie to me...I turned it off after about twenty minutes and went back to "The Pacific" and watched the portrayal of real heroes.

Has anyone else noticed that Lee Child's exhibits nearly total ignorance when it comes to handguns. In his novels, he characterizes the .38 caliber as wholly ineffective at penetration and accuracy. Hell, he has Reacher take a bullet from a .38 snubbie because he knows his chances are good it won't kill him. In another of his novels, he has a bad guy checking the safety on a Glock. Stuff like that bothers me, and I don't read his books anymore.

Just started reading the Jack Reacher novels. They are okay and an easy read. I had seen the movie first and so was very surprised that the real Jack Reacher was 6'5" and 250#s. Then I read the book the movie was taken from. The book made a lot more sense of things.

I checked out the books from our local library. They were missing about five from the series so I have ordered the paperbacks from Amazon and will give them to the library when finished. The head librarian told me they may order his latest which is due out on Nov 7th.

I read about one a day so it won't take long to get through the series. Then I have to look for another series. I will give "Justified" or "Longmire" a shot.

If firearms mistakes upset you, stay away from Longmire and anything else by Craig Johnson.

I don't care for Tom Cruise, and was prepared to dislike the first Reacher movie because of the points others have made. However, it wasn't bad. I thought he did a credible job. For a midget.

So I happen to have read the book "Make Me", that started this thread last year. It was my first Jack Reacher novel; maybe that was a mistake, as it will be my last. Too weird, and the story-telling was too linear for my taste. Stuff just happened, Reacher always stayed über-cool, no twists and turns, the bad guys are obvious, the way it will end is obvious. And the actual "mysterious" part, as I said, just weird. Not my cup of tea.

I'd actually seen the Tom Cruise movie before that and thought it was a halfway decent, but unremarkable action flick, likely because I wasn't into the books and therefore had no hang-ups about how tall he was supposed to be.

I've read all the Lee Child books, and I liked the first few, but the rest didn't seem as good. Still, I read them all.

When my son (who has read them too) told me they were making a movie starring Tom Cruise, I laughed. I also swore I wouldn't go see it. I mean, Jack Reacher is described in every single book, and there is no way that Cruise rises to that description! My son pleaded with me to go see it with him, and when he said he would buy the tickets AND the refreshments, I thought, "What have I got to lose?"

I was pleasantly surprised...they didn't have Cruise stand on a box, or use CGI tricks, or anything else to make him appear larger. The movie was actually good, IMO...if you'd never read the books, you'd probably think it was really good.

I'll give the next movie a try...especially if my son pays my way! ;)

Can't handle a 5'7" dude playing Reacher. Also Reacher is not a good looking guy, kind of rough looking with short hair. Cruise is a total turn off.

Remember when the USA network did a made-for-TV movie based on one of the Prey novels? Remember who they got to play Lucas Davenport, the large, dark detective with the bizarre taste for Colt Gold Cups?

Mark ****ing Harmon.

Side note: Gold Cups? Look, if you're gonna make a book/teevee detective, and you wanna give him a signature sidearm, you can do a wee bit better than the Gold Cup (although admittedly, not back when Lucas Davenport made his first print appearance).

I'm thinking, maybe a Dan Wesson .357, loaded with .38 Specials, but with 200-grain .35 Remington bullets.
