So my girlfriend and I took up back pack camping and she had never been camping in her life and now loves it. Been to Colorado, Alaska, and Montana the last couple years and hope to do a lot more as soon as it warms up a little but she says we absolutely MUST have a good gun for bear defense. Well now I have a reason/excuse to buy a new gun and get a 4" M&P 10mm.
First the good news, excellent ergonomics! I have medium large hands and I put on the small grip panel and it fits me perfectly with the trigger, safety, and all controls in the right place with a great "feel". The optics/suppressor height sights looked like they might get in the way a little but man, they work great and that tall front sight just wants to hang on the target. And the trigger, ohhh the trigger. It's better than both my Sig 365 and 365 XL with zero over travel which is very important to me, and much much better than the .40 M&P 1.0 I use to have. The magazine is easy to load with those big fat 10mm rounds and I'm not dropping any cartridges on the ground or tearing up my thumbs like with the tiny 9mms. The mag latch seems very positive and secure and I had no problems at all with magazines inadvertently coming out. Accuracy was great, I was shooting it better than my 9mms due to the great trigger, tall sights, and excellent grip. Recoil was not bad but definitely a bit stouter than a .45 and I was shooting 180 grain Sig ammo at 1250 fps. My 117 lb girlfriend didn't like the recoil at first but she kept shooting it and got used to it and was really proud of herself hitting the middle of the silhouette target at 25 yds. I have owned Smith .41 and .44 magnum revolvers and I didn't enjoy shooting them a lot but with this gun I look forward to burning up a lot ammo in it. Reliability was 100% with no issues.
Now the bad, we didn't like the sharp grip texture at first but I think we both got used to it and realized it helped hang on to the gun. I don't think I would change it even if I could. Also the gun geniuses have decided we don't need a slide release, that a slide stop is best. Well I like a good slide release like a 1911 and don't want to sling shot the gun to charge it. Not a deal breaker but just annoying.
The ugly, the gun is not polished blue steel and walnut. But, as far as plastic guns go it looks pretty cool, maybe I liked the looks of it more because it shot so well. So to sum things up this gun is darn near a perfect 10 to me and I've owned over 100 guns but I realize some other people have not had very good luck with it. I need to put a lot more rounds through the pistol before I give it the final kiss of approval, but right now I'm really looking forward to it.
Almost forgot, with the rebate I paid $489 so its a great value also.
