I mounted a BURRIS FF mounting equivalent (Primary Arms $109 model) to the CORE using the screws supplied by S&W and mounting plate #5.

Called Primary Arms, and they suggested that this red dot has not been tested on the M&P but will fit perfect and will co-witness, and is able to handle very high shock levels (higher than their lower level models) The information on the box and the instructions suggest that it's compatible and will integrate with most all rifle and handgun applications using the mounting plates provided by the weapon manufacturer.

So I was excited to mount and try it. On the 5-6th shot the red dot site briskly broke off the gun, hit me in the right eye (wearing safety glasses), and hit the floor. after collecting the parts scattered all over the gun range floor, yes, the mounting plate, the bottom plate, battery, screws and of course the sight. Much to my dismay, I notice that the S&W screws were both broke off into the slide. Snapped off not sticking out at all.

What do I do now? This is ridiculous. Pic is attached...

Any suggestions? HELP! Thanks!

Contact S&W, sounds like the screws missed heat treatment.

It's not a big deal a competent gunsmith or metalworker can either use a screw extractor or drill out the screws and re-tap the hole threads if necessary. You probably over torqued the screws causing them to stress.

I was actually concerned with the tightening of the screws, they have locktite on them, so I chose not to tighten too much. Thanks - I'll contact SW first thing Monday, cuz this is something I shouldn't have to pony up $ for a gunsmith to fix, the screws should not just snap like that!

I'm sure S&W will sort it out the reason I said do it yourself is you'll have to wait.

Yeah! Good point, I hate waiting. I have a 3gn comp next Saturday. Maybe ship it to them on that Monday after. Just use it with the stock sites.

UPDATE:

I bought the SpeedOUT kit from Home Depot. It was $19.99 and I was not sure it would be able to get enough flat surface drilled out to use the extractor, especially the smallest one is still pretty large compared to those screws. Well it worked amazing!! OMG - I made not 1 mark on any part of the slide, perfect extraction of 2 broken off screws, and in about 10 minutes total between for the both of them. (Took my time making darn sure I didn't slip off the uneven surface of the top of the broken screws or mar any part of the slide finish). Kudos to Speedout - it works well even in a situaiton that didn't seem likely to work.

Thanks for y'alls input!

Nice work. A gunsmith in the making. It would have scared me doing it and I am fearless. Don

Thanks man, IDK, I was really frustrated with the attitude I got from S&W on my phone call. So I figured I'll give it a shot, I was really careful, but I was aware if I f- it up, I can just get a Trijicon rmr sight, and use the different tapped holes for it, instead of the ones that have a screw stuck in them.

I put the slide in a vice with some protection to not mar it with the vice jaws. I took a center tap and lightly hammered a centering location on the broken screw. Used the smallest bit from the SpeedOUT kit. First couple tries and it didn't grab at all on the extractor side. But I went back and hit it again with the smoothing bit, and next go at the extractor, I saw the screw remnant move! YES!! So a little more pressure and slowly the screw mad about 1 full turn, and I was then able grab and unscrew it with my hand. About the exact same thing happened with the 2nd screw.

Huge relief, and felt pretty proud of the accomplishment. About like I felt when I put in the competition APEX trigger kit. LOL!

Well done Raz excellent job and not an easy one. 5 gold stars!

Good job. I've used those "easyouts" and sometimes they're not so easy. Also good thing you were wearing eye protection when this happened.
Smiths will probably send you new screws but who is going to pay for the sight, presuming it was broken.
