After putting it off for several years we are shopping for a new adjustable bed (actually two twins that equal a king). We have looked at the Sovn, the Duxbed, and the Hasten beds. All of them are excellent, high end products. All of them cost much more than I ever thought I'd pay for a bed. (But then I am also paying much more for 100+ year old revolvers than I ever thought I would, too, so that is a specious argument).

The Sovn and the Dux are both synthetic materials and roughly equal in cost. The Hasten is all natural material and slightly more costly. At this point, we are leaning toward the Hasten.

I wonder if any of you have, or have spent any time sleeping on any of those three beds and have any comments on them?

Bob,

Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with any of the three that you mention.

Unfortunately, my wife and I are in the same market. Our king size set, a very good one with great orthopedic qualities is worn out after 15 years and several grand children and a great child.

I was shocked at the price of new sets. I could fill in a gap in my collection for the current asking price. It is too bad that mattress sets don't last like good old S&W's, no matter how well they are taken care of.

I wish you well in your search and thanks again for sponsoring me for membership in the SWCA many years ago.

Wife and I went mattress shopping.
I knew what the prices were.
I just wanted a really good mattress.
Every salesperson outright lied about their mattresses.
Every salesperson trashed talked about the competition.

The prices of mattresses are fixed by the manufacturer. I thought this was illegal?

We quit in fustration

Buddy,

I got tired of sleeping on three pillows and bricks to avoid my reflux. Ten years ago I had esophageal cancer and a gastro-esophageal resection. I was very lucky to have dodged that bullet so I am pretty serious about not going there again. Consequently, the adjustable feature and comfort are the most important and the cost (as long as it is "do-able") fades into the background. One plus; with a script from my internist, I don't have to pay the 8.25% TX sales tax.

Very pleased to have sonsored you and hope we can meet up in person at an SWCA meeting some time soon.

From the ads I hear, one can save a lot on most brands by watching for sales of discontinued models (like last year's) and mattresses and box springs that don't match.

Salesmen in all fields lie and trash the competition, so I guess that all one can do is look for consumer reviews and buy a good brand name.

Alas,I have not tried those mentioned by Bob Bettis. I hope he gets what best suits his needs. Probably, just trying one in a store will give the best feedback from your own body.

First-in order to get the length, you will have to go with 2 queens. Twins are shorter. We have temperpedic beds. My wife has the regular temperpedic, and I have a temperpedic base with a solid latex posturepedic mattress on it. I need the support, and I am big-6'4" and over 300. Also, the material the temperpedic mattress is made from stores body heat, which my wife likes, and I could not abide. Price is certainly a considderation, but anything I can't sleep on is not a bargain at any price. Don't forget the secondhand market.

Select Comfort

My wife and I have had a select comfort bed for the last 8 years and love it.

The problem with memory foam beds is your mattress comforms to the way you're laying. It wants to lock you in that position a bit.

My wife and I have different sleep numbers but both of us enjoy the flexibility of how firm the mattress is.

If you're feeling frisky, tweak both sides up to 100. Firm...er..works for us.;):D

I don't know much about the mattress brands you are looking at.
All I know is that shopping for a mattress is confusing and for the most part it is a big scam.
No stores carry the same one and you can't price shop very much.
It is so hard to tell which one feels really good or would be what you want till you get them in the home.--Just sayin

BTW, if you have a Select Comfort outlet near you, you can lay on the mattress and see what your sleep number might be. The Select Comfort bed also has options like a hospital bed set-up.
We love ours.

I just bought a new mattress set. ( fixin to be X took the other set ) I ended up buying a Paula Dean pillow top foam mattress. Have slept very very well on it. As far as recreational use, I have not gotten that far yet. I like the pillow top because the body heat does not build up. The other was a foam slab and I stayed hot most of the time.

I don't have any experience with what you listed but can tell you that up to about a year ago I had severe upper back and neck issues. I got a Bob O Pedic memory foam mattress and inside of three days I felt like a new man and my back and neck problems have all but disappeared inside of a month.

It used to be that that matress association would rate matresses with a "star" system, which was printed on the fabric tag sewn on the mattress.

* = extra soft
** = soft
*** = firm
**** = very firm
***** = extra firm

The big retailers (read Sleepy's and 1-800-MATTRES) insisted that their purchases not be labelled so that buyers could not compare products.

And retailers like Sam's Club get mattresses that are given special names so you cannot compare their prices with others either.

Also be aware that some of the Tempurpedic type mattresses ship folded in a small box. I bought a genuine tempurpedic that arrived folded. It never fully recovered from the fold and there remains (after 5 years) a raised ridge running between the two sides of the mattress. Buy these types of mattresses in the un-folded state and do not accept any that are not completely flat.

We get Forbes magazine in our office. A while back they did a review and the Haastens came out on top. But I think it was an $8,000.00 mattress. It was several years ago.

I like a firm mattress. Every time My wife and went to buy a new mattress she would agree to the firm mattress I would pick out then ask the salesperson to add a three inch "pillow top." Duhhh!!!!

We finally started looking for alternatives. We found the Tempurpedic hot and difficult to roll over in. One of my employees gave the Tempurpedic a 90 day trial and returned it after he developed a rash all over his back.

We settled on the Sleep Number Bed. I sleep at 70 and she sleeps at 45.

The pressures have to be equalized for nocturnal activities or you find yourself rolling off.

+1. The cost is comparable to a good quality box springs and mattress set. Their customer service is very good also. When we got ours, it took very little time to set it up. The first night I awoke to the mattress on my side deflated leaving me encased:p. Once I extricated myself, I found that the valve on my side wasn't closing and slowly letting the mattress to deflate. I called C/S and they had a new pump to me in a very short time. I just inflated my side in the meantime and used a plug to keep the air in. We haven't had an issue since that one and love the support it gives us. We sleep very well with it.

I recently bought a new mattress at Sam's Club. They offered three grades. I bought the highest grade. It cost, with the bed frame and delivery about $1,000.00. Which was about the same price as the cheapest bed from Sleepys.

It was bought for the guest bedroom which previously had only a futon bed. It's only been slept on one night but my brother-in-law said it was very nice.

When it comes time to replace my Tempurpedic I think I will buy another from Sam's. They have their own models so you cannot compare them with any other, but it is a Sealy, so it is likely to be fairly good.

I never liked the Tempurpedic. I only bought it because it was easy to take home (it came folded up in a box).
