I just picked up a New Model No.3 Top Break in 44 Russian.

It's a refinished 'Shooter' Grade and not in too bad shape overall.

It has a problem with the Extractor; as you open the Gun, the Extractor lifts normally but does not retract and the Gun only seems to open partially, then stops before it should. The Extractor does go back down as you close the Gun but something is not right.

I notice the round cam type doo-hickey looks like it might have been put in upside-down; the Notches are facing the top, inside when you look at it open instead of being facing the bottom where you can push them back to not extract as you open the Gun.

What I want to try before having to go to the Gunsmith is to take the Barrel off and see if I can reinstall the Cam (or whatever it's correctly called) back in the right way and see if that fixes the problem.

I took out the Hinge screw but that's as far as I got. The Pin did not want to slip out easily and I decided to leave it until I had some expert advice.
What is the trick to removing the Hinge Pin?

I'm thinking a fine drift down the screw hole (small enough to avoid damaging the Screw Thread) and gently drift it out - I don't want to wreck anything so if anyone here is an old hand with Top Breaks; i'd be glad of some guidance here.

Instead of removing the barrel first try some good penetrating solvent to dissolve old dried up crud.

Lubed everything; the Gun doesn't feel gummed up, there is a mechanical issue I believe in the Cam/Hinge.

The Extractor itself can be lifted manually from where the Gun will not open further so it doesn't seem to be in the Extractor.
