A new Netflix dramatized series started last Friday called "The Crown." 10 one-hour episodes, chronicling Queen Elizabeth's early days from her marriage to Prince Philip, her assumption of the crown in 1952, to Winston Churchill's retirement in 1955. Wife and I binge-watched it over the weekend. A must-see for all you Anglophyles. If you liked "Downton Abbey," you'll love "The Crown." It begs for another season or two. Or three.

My wife and I watched that series, and enjoyed it very much. From what I've read, Netflix has already committed to another season for sure, with four more planned. I wish they wouldn't put one season up until they are all ready! :p

John Lithgow's portrayal of Churchill is worth watching the series for all by itself. He doesn't resemble Churchill that closely, but you sort of forget about that.

I would love to see "The Last Viceroy" broadcast again. Nicol Williamson looked nothing like the movie-star-handsome Mountbatten, but was splendid, as were the other cast members. The man who played Nehru was awfully good.

Visually stunning, too.

I am by no means an Anglophile, though I wish the country well. And I am not into watching TV shows about the British aristocracy, generally speaking. (Now, British mystery shows are different. Those I like.)

But I do admire Queen Elizabeth. She became queen, 1952, the year I was born. She has always handled herself so... regally..., I guess is the right word.

I wish her well.

My mother was the business manager at the Alamo when Queen Elizabeth visited. She said they had to undergo extensive protocol training in advance of the visit, but the Queen was quite pleasant in person.

My wife and I enjoyed "The Crown." I think wife enjoyed it more than me. She's definitely looking forward to the Season 2.

It was interesting that they showed the graphic details of one of the Queen's race horses in the act of breeding with a mare. For, as I remember, a fee of 10,000 Pounds which went into the Queen's pocket. That was a lot of dollars in 1955.

How a queen behaves:

It was a close call for the queen.

A walk around the grounds of Buckingham Palace in the very early morning hours nearly got Queen Elizabeth II shot by one of her guards, The Times of London reported on Wednesday.

When she has a difficult time sleeping, the queen will put on a raincoat and walk around the palace grounds, The Times reported, quoting a former guardsman.

He was on patrol inside the palace walls at 3 a.m. on an unspecified day several years ago when he saw a figure in the darkness, according to reports.

Thinking he had spotted an intruder, The Times said, he called out, "Who's that?"

"To his surprise, it was the queen," according to the account. "'Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,' he blurted out."

Realizing his remarks were inappropriate, the guard expected to be rebuked.

Instead, The Times reported, Her Majesty replied: "That's quite all right. Next time I'll ring through beforehand so you don't have to shoot me."
