Was wondering in Barnes and Noble today at lunch and noticed a new Reacher book "Personal". I thought Lee Child was done with Reacher. Anybody read it yet?

I usually wait for them to reach the library or the bargain shelves. The review in the Denver Post wasn't very positive.

For about his fiirst 10 or 12 books I was a die hard fan. Wouldn't read anything else. Then a funny thing happened, he began to improve his plots and character and story development. But he started slackin' off some on the action scenes and gettin' busy with the ladies more and more.

This trend continued and by now I've about lost all interest in Jack Reacher. Also I made a big mistake and watched the movie. now I can't get the image of the girly man as Reacher out of my head.

Unless someone informs me that he has gotten back to the OLD Jack Reacher that used to take names and kick butt I think I'm done. Please let us know how "Personal" goes.

The plots are all so similar that I can't keep them straight. There is a copy of one in our break room. I had to scan through it and read several pages before I remembered that I read it.

I read "Personal" recently, and I'm still a fan. This book is especially interesting to shooters, and there is no female interest for "Jack." I liked the book very much, but it wasn't my favorite, but I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

I had a credit slip at the local used book store and they had a recent hard cover of Personal at half-price. I'm about half-way through it. He's already killed one guy with a single whack in the neck so I guess it's pretty good.

I recently read the two retrospective novels about the protagonist's time as a US Military Police officer. I knew nothing about the author, but after twenty pages I decided he had never served in the US Army. After forty pages, I decided that he had never served in anyone's army. After looking up his background, I felt very smug that I was right. And if I pointed out the stuff that gave him away, I'm sure Childs would just smile and keep counting his royalties.

Well, as usual, I'm with the minority here. I am a fan. I like the way he writes the novels and have gone through all but a few of his later ones (I have them on DVD, just haven't gotten to them yet.

Some of the criticisms of his gun knowledge can be excused or even found to be correct, i.e. we pretty much all thought the G17 was so named because it held 17 in the mag back in the 80s. Then came the G19 and we realized we were, uhhhh, uhhhh, well, wrong.

He has made a few mistakes with guns, the most notable in the first novel with the cone of death from a 00 shotgun shell.

He's made a few military mistakes, i.e. thinking Ft. Dix was a Marine base.

But, overall, not bad books.

I've read every single one of Lee Child's "Reacher" books. IMHO, This one is a little weak on plot and a little better on character development. I can forgive Child for his errors in gun technology just because the 'read' is so darn entertaining. I will continue to read any book by Lee Child. I refused to go see the movie and won't see one until the movie industry does right by "Reacher" and gets a suitable actor. Every single "Reacher" book has now been optioned for a movie. ...... At a conference I attended many years ago one of the writers attending
said, "Life is too short to read Joyce Carol Oates."

Also too short to waste time on Lee Child and the Jack Reacher books.

I have a Kindle, it has saved me from the depths of boredom on many occaisons like trips to the dentist office where women's mags rule, or just about anywhere I might be stuck for a few minutes. I started reading truly good stuff but found I couldn't just put it down when they called my name. I like the Reacher series for just that purpose, it is a great time consumer and with due credit I have gotten hooked by Child's into reading for more than an hour at home to find out what Old Jack is gonna do. I could not believe it when they named a namby pamby like Cruise to star as Reacher.
I'm currently using the Hornblower series to the same effect, I prefer that era and finished the Maturin/Aubry series last year.

I have read a couple of the Reacher books and in fact read one on the flight from Atlanta to Portland last week. I about broke out laughing when he described the gun used by the killer as a Ruger Mark ll semiauto in 22 gauge! The author needs to do a little more research on his weapons I think.

One of my favorite writers has been Robert Crais since I first discovered hid Joe Pike and Elvis Cole books years ago. He has a new one out now with some new characters in it and I started it last night. I've read good things about it and I expect it will be a good read.

the name of the book is "Suspect".

I will probably continuing reading them, although they're not as good as the earlier ones. Personally, I liked him as a Major. Also looking forward to the new Crais book. Just finished Wayfaring Stranger by James Lee Burke, highly recommended.

Surprise surprise, it seems I already have book 1 in my audible library. For the life of me I can't recall reading it.

I'll give it another try.

The series I liked the most was the Longmire books.

I'll give Killing Floor another try.

Book Report

Well teacher I read book one. Then two, three and four. Tonight I watched the Tom Cruise production "Jack Reacher"

To be honest I enjoyed the movie more than the four books combined.

I'll have to be pretty hard up for something to read before I pick up book five. And the thought of a total of 19 books in the series makes we wonder about..........

I'll finish the report tomorrow, or the next day, or...

I picked up 'Killing floor' after reading the mostly positive reviews on the forum. It wasn't a bad read, but I gave it some leeway for being a first attempt, character development, etc.

I have to admit I'm stalled through 'Die trying'. I just can't explain why the bad guys didn't kill Reacher outright in the first five pages.

Not sure if I have another 10 books in me...,

The last book before "Personal" had a teaser in the rear - the first chapter of "Personal". I read it and thought it was pretty good. I agree that they need to cast someone else for the role in future movies. Not the Cruise was "bad" - he's just...not 6'-5".

In my opinion the best Reacher book so far has been "Bad Luck and Trouble". Reacher is working with 3 of his former team members, investigating the deaths of the other 4. Great read.
