Picked up a new revolver yesterday, like new anyway, a gently used Ruger GP 100 3" barrel fixed sight .357. Got it here on the Forum from member "Jimbo C", a pleasant transaction, by the way...

Picked it up from my dealer and immediately took it to my mountain top lair and shooting range, putting about 100 rounds of jacketed and cast lead handloads through it.

What a great revolver! Smooth trigger, fixed sights regulated exactly right, POI=POA with 158 grain bullets out to 40 yards. It is capable of fine accuracy as well, here are some results:

15 yards single action, careful two hand hold. The center white portion of the target is 1 3/4 inches:

25 yards, again with a standing careful two hand hold, single action. Six shots on the steel rabbit:

Ten yards double action, shooting as fast as I could re-acquire the target. This is probably 20 rounds or so, I was having so much fun I lost count:

This revolver is going to replace my blued 1972 vintage Security Six as my daily carry piece. I have an old Bianchi #5 Thumb Break holster that I'll use until I can find a nice IWB holster.

I have the same model and love it.

Few handguns, if any, offer the all around versatility and capability of a six-shot .357 Magnum. Congrats on your acquisition.

I agree, and prefer the 3" barrel to do it. Never understood why 3" wasn't the norm versus 2.5" or less for magnum snubbies. They did make them, but in S&W and Colt they were a lot rarer and now command "collector" money, not utility use money.

I have a four inch fixed sight GP, between it, and the 1911 they are the guns I go to first to carry.

Very nice!

I have a Wiley Clapp GP100 I carry frequently - I absolutely love it. I carry mine in a JM Custom Kydex AIWB.

I highly recommend you get a set of the Ruger compact rubber grips with the wood panels. They aren't cheap, but they are the best set of revolver grips I have ever had in my hand, period.

I also have a 3"GP....it's my "house" revolver but gets carried often in a Simply Rugged pancake holster.

Mine shoots very high with 158grn ammo....not an issue as that gun loves Win.110grn sjhp .357 and just about any 125grn 38+p.

Great find.......enjoy

The 3" GP-100 is a terrific revolver. I have two of them, a 2004 vintage blue and a 2009 vintage stainless. The blued model was my service revolver almost 12 years, and I often shot 100% when qualifying with it.

Congrats, I've got a 4 inch Match Champion..and I've really enjoyed mine!

I've always wanted to get a 3" GP100 with fixed sights.

Useless trivia: I believe they were standard issue for the US Marshals Service before they adopted the Glock 22 towards the end of the 90s.

Nice!

Nice find. Lots of GP-100 fans out there. Here is mine in the short shroud configuration with some custom grip inserts. Enjoy that one!

GP100

Great looking Ruger. A 3" revolver just seems to look right. Curious as to why you retired your Security Six ?

A friend has one, and I like it. The problem for me is I have owned nothing but Smith's all my adult life, and the cylinder release is backwards to me. Similar to changing from GM cars to a Ford.

Congrats on your new revolver!

I also have a few Ruger revolvers (most of them are of the Security Six series), and am surprised that you would "retire" your SS Ruger for a GP.

I have a 3" GP100 Wiley Clapp (is a nice revolver), but much prefer my 2.75" Police Service Six for CCW.

Now, for in the field, carrying non-concealed, I would find that as the "perfect situation" for my GP.

Sorry for the bad photos, I'm not home and they were all I had on here. The GP WC photo is from the sale add, when I bought it.

I believe Ruger revolvers are highly underrated.
My 3" SP101 is an absolutely fantastic revolver with a trigger to die for.

Newsport,

The Security Six I have is blued, and I prefer stainless steel. The Security Six is also an early one, made the first year of manufacture. A "150" serial number prefix that has a unique grip shape, meaning you are stuck with the original grips. No one made aftermarket grips for the early 150 prefix revolvers, and I find the originals kind of small.

That and I didn't like seeing blue loss and grip dings from carrying it every day.

The GP 100 will see me through the rest of my life, and I won't mind seeing wear on it. This GP 100 is more accurate than my Security Six as well....

you are stuck with the original grips. ..... I find the originals kind of small....

You might try a Tyler T Grip on that. The same T Grip (#8 I think) fits both grip frames of the Six Series and the Redhawk, NOT Super Redhawk of course.

Sweet congrats on your GP 100 .357 3".

The 3" GP100 is a nice chunky, but compact revolver. I've grown very fond of the big revolver. So much that I own more than one.
