New Ruger

I picked up a new Ruger 10/22 for my wife last week at the LGS. It is the classic model, carbine with the wood stock and barrel band. We bought some 25 round magazines, a scope, and a magazine loading tool from the RugerStore online.

I always clean new guns before I shoot them. I could not believe how dirty the new Ruger was. Metal dust/filings in the bore, greasy black stuff. The action was clean.

Ordered the mags and took the rifle to the indoor range. It shoots great. Winchester hi-speed and Eley semi-match ammo, both flawless. The 25 round mags are fun but made me think the Lula mag loader was a good idea. Also ordered the scope from Ruger.

The Ruger Shop is faster than Amazon Prime, and friendlier. The mag loader makes that job easy. She has 2 10 round and 2 25 round mags loaded and ready to go next trip. I get to load as she empties those ;-)

I will update when we get the scope sighted in.

You probably already know how iconic these little rifles are. Until looking it up, I had no idea they have been in production since 1964.

Like all of my early firearms, I picked up this 10/22 brand new at the local K-Mart department store, somewhere around 1975.

My friend and I used to pick up 1000 rounds or so any time they went on sale and it was nothing to go through 500 rounds in a day as we carried our rifles around on the farm ...day, night, winter, summer. It's been dropped from tractors and been exposed to quite a few elements. Still doesn't look too bad for all the wear. Even after all those rounds, the trigger never smoothed out. But that never stopped it from being a tack driver.

This one has had several drum and belt feed magazines and banana clips. And, the high-end scope you see here

Hope your wife gets just as must enjoyment out of hers, minus the tractor rides and snow storms.

I have one of the K-Mart specials. I couldn't tolerate the trigger so I tit a good stone job on it. It still isn't fantastic but it's good enough to keep me from messing with it further. I bought my wife one of the newer take downs with synthetic stock and soft case. It did come with a better trigger but I also put bought one of the Ruger trigger kits for it. Put a nice Nikon scope on it too. She likes it. I like my old K-Mart special.

And yeah, everyone should have one.

I got one 10/22, a 2006 "Wally World Special." With it's longer SS barrel, it feels much better to me than the standard carbine model. More like a "big rifle." I added a 4X Bushnell blister pack scope and a $5.00 nylon sling both from Wally World, and had a fellow on RimfireCentral.com do a trigger job on it. It is a squirrel killing machine I tell you.

You might want to try a Ruger BX replacement trigger (VERY easy to install).... If you want a superior trigger, try Brimstone Gunsmithing.

YUP, everyone should have a 10/22 (from a guy who waited over 50 years to get his).

Guess it always pays to clean a new gun before shootin. Always nice to hear a report on newer versus the older model of the same gun. Sure are a lot more cosmetic changes to the newer 10/22s over the one I had. made in 1966 according to the serial. Walnut with barrel band and not bad bluing. Hopefully the innards are still decent quality. Not sure if the same or replaced with other material. Seems like the suggested retail of $56 stuck around awhile way back. Sure is one iconic gun.
