Finally got a chance to take my new 500 6.5 to the range. What a blast, literally! I only shot 10 rounds cause I want to save the rest of the ammo for an upcoming camping trip. I was using Parabellum Research 400gr. Grouping wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was at an outdoor range and using just my Howard Leight electronic muffs was sufficient. I gave a friendly warning to shooters on either side of me, and they said they could really feel the concussive force. One guy was 2 bays away and could feel it also. I couldn't feel the concussive force at all, and the recoil wasn't as bad as some people say, although I did use gloves. The only place I felt a little pain was on my right hand between my thumb and index finger below where that webbing between them is. Can't wait for more!

I dont get where that complaint comes from. Took 20 rounds to the range today and shot them all (wish i had brought more) i have no soreness at all. Shot 325 grain. It is indeed a blast to shoot. I have a friend who weighs under 120 and she loves shooting it too without complaint of recoil

Some folks just seem to be more recoil sensitive than others. I don't have a 500, but I do have a 460 V. Any idea how the recoil compares between the two?

To the OP, what type of holster are you planning on using during your camping trip?

I just bought a cheap one I found on E-Bay. It's a cammo nylon bandoleer type. It fits the gun pretty good. Not heavy at all. Paid $35 for it. Maybe down the road I'll get one of those Guides Choice Chest holster from Diamond D Custom Leather $165.

Thanks for the info. I have been debating about the best method to carry my 460 when out and about in the woods. I have the 5" barrel length so I could use a belt mounted holster, but I am not sure how that would handle the weight.

On Recoil...

I'm never sure what to think when people "complain" about recoil. Some people think 38+p is a lot of recoil. Some people think standard velocity 38spec in a J frame is a lot of recoil. I've never fired a pistol in my life that I thought had "too much recoil". They have recoil. They're guns. To expect them to not recoil would be like taking up boxing but not liking the feel of getting hit.

Now having said all that, even Gunny says the 500 is too much recoil for him. I've never fired one. But I've fired a bunch of 44 mag and a mega bunch of 357 mag in every size gun imaginable down to a sub 2" J frame. They kick! I enjoy the kick. Shooting isn't bowling.
