New SD9VE Slide fails to lock back, failure to feed

I have a new SD9VE with the following issues and was wondering if anyone had similar experiences.

I am not a new shooter. And do not have these issues with other weapons I have used. I like the feel and ergonomics of the weapon and it is reasonably accurate out of the box.

Slide does not lock back most of the time.
Frequent failure to feed.

The weapon has been cleaned and lubricated well.
It does not seem to be magazine or ammo related.

Round count between 200 and 300.

Four stock 10 round mags. (Mags are still a bit tight but have been sitting fully charged for a week or two.)

Factory Ammo. Federal,Remington and Winchester.

Any thoughts on possible causes and solutions.

There will be some guys with lots more experience chiming in shortly but I have a question. Have you allowed anyone else to shoot the gun to see if they experience the same issues? If they do, then I would suspect something in the gun. If they do not, then I would take a look at your grip.

Just an idea to get you started.

Thanks for the reply. No I have not let anyone else fire the weapon as of yet. Did think of that just have not had the opportunity. However, I doubt it is a grip issue. It is not the only semiauto I shoot / have shot. Never had a problem before. It is worth considering though. tnx

I've got about 600 rounds through mine...failed to lock back once, otherwise it has been flawless. Not one ftf or fte.

The only time I've ever had FTF's with my SD40VE was while running some Fiocchi JHP's but ammo does not seem to be your issue. I think a call to S&W CS might be in order.

The symptoms you describe are called "short stroking." The slide is not going far enough back.

Frequent causes a shooter can address are:
1. Wimp ammo. Get a 124gr quality brand and see if problem goes away.
2. Incorrect grip for type of gun. Have experienced "plastic fantastic" shooter try it.
3. Wrong recoil spring. Put in standard spring (factory might have made mistake).

If that's all been checked, I'd call S&W customer service warranty number.

Have 700 rounds through my SD9VE with no issues at all from the first round fired. Have bought 2 extra mags and no issues with them either.

I've had no issues with WWB through either of my 9's or 45's so far (SD9VE/RugerP89DC; Ruger SR1911/M&P 45 FS 4.5" bbl). I've also ran other factory ammo and reloads through the SD9VE with no issues.

I hope you get it sorted out, mine runs flawlessly and is accurate too! The more I shoot it, the better/smoother the trigger gets.

Thanks OKFC05 This is my 2nd SD9VE my other one did not have any failure to feed issues and was not particular with ammo. The slide failed to lock back on it as well occasionally but cleared up after about 100 rounds. So I suspect it is not a grip or limp wrist issue. However, you mentioned the recoil spring, this one does feel a bit tighter (subjectively). It has been sitting with the slide locked back for a few days. Not sure if that will make a difference but will see in a few days. If not I will contact S&W.

Mine did the same thing for the first 20 or so rounds.
Since then, ZERO problems. I shoot 115 grain fmj's for practice. I'm around 400 rounds at this time.

Update - Actions Taken and results

1) Locked the slide back and let is sit that way for a week or two.

2) Cleaned the weapon with REALLY good with CLP.

3) Let the mags sit fully charged as well.

I functioned tested it seemed ok. Let it get pretty dirty - no issues. Cleaned it really good again.
Last match functioned perfectly no problems. Total round count now probably a little better than 400.

Put a small dab of silicone caulk on the top of the magazine follower, where it catches the slide stop. It's not pushing it up and enough to catch the slide well. May have to reapply every so often.

I glued a tiny piece of .030 plastic on the mag follower, works great every time
