Just saying hello to the forum. Last Friday the 11/26/15 I picked up my first S&W firearm. Not my first firearm, but will be my carry soon when I get my ccw. I haven't had the chance to shoot it. I bought it from a private seller for $350 with a box of ammo. Owner said that he's only gone to the range with it once. I think I got a good deal... Slide is stiff but I'm sure it will get easier once i put a few hundred rounds thru it. Today 12/1/15 I was able to acquire two extra 8rd magazines still in sealed packaging from another private seller for $60. Thanks for looking!

This is my first....

This is my first post on the M&P forum as an owner. I just got a Shield, too. I posted a general range report on several guns in the Lounge, but this is specifically about the Shield.

That is one sweet shooting, comfortable, fun gun. And extremely practical for carry. You made a nice score.

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that I am a new member in the forum. Hello All and Thanks rwsmith

Yes, the Recoil Spring is stiff as also are the Magazine Springs suggest that you check out the UpLULA. These are not firearm brand specific. Talon Rubberized Gripes are also an often added option for the Shield.

Be careful how you place the recoil spring assembly after reassembly.

Welcome to The Forum!

Good choice! I too have a Shield, both 9mm and .40. They are both great guns, but I have gone to carrying the 9mm because it handles so much better than the .40 in this little package. Don't get me wrong, the .40 handles well, but the 9mm handles better. Congratulations on the new Shield! I am sure you will like it a lot. Everybody I know that has one, loves it!

Thanks everyone. Uplula is on the list but not up there. Yes i noticed the magazine springs are tight as well. I've kept the 7rd and 8rd mag fully loaded for a few days now, taking out the rounds and putting them back in. I can already tell its getting easier doing them by hand. Can't wait for next weekend to take it to the range!

Dan, congratulatons on your purchase. I can't guarantee the slide will get much looser, I know I've shot easlily over 1,000 rounds in mine (without any jams or misfeeds) and the spring is still pretty tight. It's my favorite CCW by a long shot and one I actually enjoy shooting at the range. My Shield also doesn't have the external safety which I think is the model you have and I really like not having to worry about taking a safety off. Regarding ammo, I prefer the 124 grain bullets and I usually purchase in bulk from Freedom Munitions. New customers get free shipping and I think their ammo burns much cleaner than most name brands you can get on sale anywhere else. I usually get their round nose "new" ammo and have never had jams or misfires with it. They may also be having a Christmas sale right now. Anyway, you've made a great selection in your purchase. Regards, Elliot45

Elliot,

Thanks a lot. This is actually in fact the model WITH the safety but thats ok with me. I did purchase the firearm with a free box of 124gr magtechs. Thanks for the recommendation!

I too forgot that it isn't ambidextrous, the safety is only on one side.

That is correct. Its not an ambidextrous mag release.

Has this always been the case with the manual safeties and mag releases on the Shield? It seems like all the other M&P's have ambidextrous manual safeties and mag releases.

Now, if S&W made the grip about an inch longer, I'd be all over the Shield.

P.S. Before you say it, I do not like the concept of using mag extensions to lengthen the grip. Depending upon the magazine to be a part of the grip only increases the possibility of bad magazine exchanges.

My $.02.

Ordered a pierce grip extension at walmart for $9. Just gives enough surface for the pinky to rest on
