I picked up a set of grips from Thailand a few years ago, but I hated the flat-out orange color of them. They were a good size for my hands, though.
After sitting in a parts drawer for years, I finally got around to refinishing them. After stripping (Citri-strip and a metal scraper) off the finish and the red-orange stain on them (that was an exciting discovery!), I hit them with some dark walnut Danish oil and a few coats of Tru-Oil.
Turns out with a little bit of work you can make some nice looking grips out of these things! Still a little lighter than I'd hoped, but I'm very happy.
First pic is the grips on my late '70s factory-refinished 10-6, the second is next to a 27 with eBay-bought 1970s-era goncalo alves (left) and the numbered walnuts on my K-22 Masterpiece (right). Much shinier and very pretty, especially with that knot on the back -- it's the best pic to show how nice they really are now that they've been finished "properly".
