I just purchased a new smith model 41 barrel 5.5 inch . The packaging had 1/2025 on it. Barrel looks fine except no markings. No smith and Wesson and no 22 long rifle. Anybody else noticed this ? I thought it should at least have caliber on it. The sight has smith and Wesson on it but it is clean on both sides of barrel ?

I just checked the example I purchased NIB in February of last year and It's rollmarked S&W as well as .22 Long Rifle.

I'm going to take a close look at the new units on display at the local gun shop/range next time I go to shoot.

I was there today and I wish I would have seen this thread because my interest is piqued since it seems odd.

Well, my M41 is a 1963, I think, 5.5" HB. But I later bought a 7" from the early '70s, I think, and then field bbl with the lazy ampersand. All are marked.

That’s very strange.

ATF requires Manufacturer, caliber and serial number on firearms. Since S&W only had serial numbers on the frames they put all the other required info on the barrels.

From personal experience, years ago my receiving FFL said he couldn’t except my Model 41. It had been heavily modified/customized by a famous guy. His work removed everything on the barrel but the serial number was still intact on the frame. The FFL said it was “illegal” for him to log it in without the caliber marked. I had him do a quick internet search and he saw a couple of other examples modified by the same guy so he conceded.

AFAIK "the gun" is either the frame or in the case of a polymer pistol the fire control group. Barrels are not serial numbered and not considered "the gun". If I am wrong about this (anything os possible these days) I'd like to see the ATF rule that sates so.

Hope this works, first time trying to attach an image.

A model 41 has the ATF “required “ info on the barrel. A barrel without this info, (like mine and dogdoc’s,) makes it interesting.

Jim, I stand corrected and just learned something new. Thank you for posting that.
