New to me 624 3"

Thanks to the info that I learned on this great forum in regards to a recent purchase of a 624 no dash 3". Not sure if it's a Lew Horton or not but it is one sweet 44 special. Anyway, it came with the combats, but I like the feel of the Ahrends a bit better. Thanks again for the replies and info.

The only Lew Horton M24s I've seen were blue...that doesn't mean some weren't nickeled though.

My brother had a blue Lew Horton M24...after he passed away his wife old it. I wish I had bought it from her but I eventually found a Horton Model 29 configured like that.

They did have a 624 3 inch lew horton with a round butt frame.

I remember when the 24 and later the 624 came out.

As I recall the first year of the reintroduction of the 24 a nickle option was available. I am not sur if Lew Horton also had a run of nickle 24s.

The 44 Special is one of my favorite handgun calibers to reload for.

The OP's gun is a 624, a stainless gun, not the 24-3 you're probably thinking of. And as far as I know, none of the 24-3s were nickel.
Markeb, you've found yourself a fine six shooter. I shoot full load specials out of mine and the n-frame handles them well. Make sure you hold onto those factory combats, they're worth a small fortune. Mine came to me with factory flat side combats beveled at the bottom. Enjoy.

I was on a business trip in southwest Virginia and stumbled onto a gun shop called Whitetail Outfitters (or something like that). Having time to kill between meetings, I went in, browsed through their display case, and a 3” 624 grabbed me and wouldn’t let go!

The only was to tell if a gun went through Horton is the s/n.......You under oath or a magnifying glass can't the difference in the Horton or the ones sold by Smith......Horton was a distributor. All 24-3' and 624's were made exactly the same by S&W. Neither is more valuable than the other.......What Horton did was to get S&W make 3 in N-frame in .44 spl......THAT, in itself was a fantastic feat.

According to the SCSW 4th Ed., S&W did make 5,000 Model 624 Combat Special revolvers for Lou Horton from 1985-1987...3" bbl., round butt, red ramp/white outline sights, GA combat stocks, stainless steel, and a fitted holster. Known s/n prefixes are AHT and ALW, with product code 103580. I think it's a cool revolver with a potent caliber!

I haven’t been fortunate enough to find a 3” 624, but I did find a 3” 24-3. I just found this 3” S&W holster at a local swap meet. Still in nice condition. Paid $20

I sent a PM to a member that has a left handed S&W holster that was sold for the 624. Haven't heard back yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Nice 24 rig.^^^

Congratulations, my 624 3" no dash was the last gun I bought before the government "freeze" on handguns (Canada). Thanks to the poster who posted two of the prefix's on the Horton models. Mine is ALW24XX , I suspected it was a Horton but this clinches it.

I shamelessly show my short ones again. No pics of the long ones. Smith wisely didn't announce limited production number on the 624's as to not be in the dilemma they caused by announcing a finite number for the 24's.
In the issue of Shooting Times(March 1985) the guns are lying on. It states. "ALL THE 3 IN 24's WERE PRE-SOLD OUT BEFORE THE FIRST ONE WAS EVER MANUFACTURED." I know I ordered mine when I first got wind of it. And had to wait till it was made......Same with my 3 in 624.
