Well, I've been looking for a 6" either 19 or 686 lately to use as a target gun. Went to the range, and they had one of each! Both were pre lock, no MIM, which was a plus. The 686 was binding near the yoke. The Model 19 (supposedly around 1987 vintage) barely had a turn line on the cylinder and like 99% bluing. It originally had a big set of wooden grips with a thumbshelf on the left for 1 handed shooting, but they were too big, so I added on the Hogue rubbers until my Ahrends retro tactical brown dyed maple finger groove grips arrive.

Nice looking 19. Should make a fine range gun with the six inch barrel and black sights. Good luck with it and congrats on your new revolver. :)

I will get a pic of the wood grips with the thumb shelf. They fit my dad who has very big hands for 1 handed shooting, but forget about 2 handed shooting with them! These are the Hogue Monogrip rubber square butt ones that I put on. I have a set of Ahrends Retro Combat square butt brown dyed curly maple on the way though :) Oh yeah, it's a 19-5.

Yeah, I was surprised at the nice shape it's in! No wear on the muzzle, barely any turn line before I shot it, no wear on the forcing cone or breech plate really. The little grooves prior to the locking bolt recessed on the cylinder are still fresh bluing and don't show any wear at all. Figure it will last a good long while with some mild 38 special target loads!

That is not a thumb shelf; it is clearance for a speed loader.

I assumed the op was referring to the more widely-used term of "thumbrest" rather than a speedloader cut-out.

Nice 19! I only have 1 K frame .357 that I bought in Sept. 13-2. The others are L, & N. 13, is accurate though! I have looked at 19's over the years, and it never happened. Enjoy your 19! It will look much better with wood on it. I had a set of thumb rest stocks on my 28, 6" no dash. I shot it well that way, but kinda ugly. Bob

They are bullseye style 1 handed shooting grips.

barrel would be pointing to the right if these were on the gun:
