Afew days ago I posted a request for assistance understanding the Model 639 that I got at a pawn shop. I had not before worked with "drop hammer safeties" or de-cockers. I do have a Model 39-2 that I am very happy with and I knew it carried the same type safety but I had never used it to any degree.

I got many super answers and tips about these S & W semi's and one tip was to allay my fears about the de-cocker (safety) lever by inserting a #2 pencil eraser end first, then (totally empty gun/mag of course) point it at the ceiling and try the de-cocker to drop hammer but keep firing pin block in place, then push lever up to firing position and squeeze the trigger.

What the tipsters DID'NT tell me...use a new, unsharpened pencil!!!:D:eek:

I don't know about you folks Model 39-2's or your 2nd Gen Model 639 but BOTH of mine worked extremely well..safety lever down = hammer at rest, trigger free (no resistance), lever pushed up with left thumb= trigger ready for very heavy 1st shot pull in double action mode. Once fired the springs are powerful enough to launch that sharp pencil dang near into orbit!:D Pencil even stuck briefly into ceiling drywall before gravity brought it down. Nice indentation in the eraser too.

Went to the range today along with #1 Son playing hookey I guess and we ran several boxes of Norma through the 639 with its 2 mags (and my blued 1st Gen Model 39-2 mags fit and worked perfect too).

We were both "pulling" that first shot far to the left...still on 12" splatter dirty bird target at 10 yards, but the other 7 went right in the bulls-eye for both of us...through 150 rounds.

My son tried a first round from hammer at rest by doing a single action move, just quick hammer thumb back to full cock using right hand thumb like normal SA. Bang...right where it belongs so I'm thinking that first DA pull is something strong that I'll just have to get used too and work with. I don't have a scale so I don't know the actual...but it sure feels heavy...very hard to squeeze.

Also I gotta tell ya (any of you with these guns knows already but like said I'm a newbie on the 2nd Gen)...that SECOND shoy you really better be READY for it...there is NO appreciable pull rate...there is barely even squeeze play...if anything it may be a couple ounces..but that trigger is way...way...way back there, strong headwind may just set that guy off.

Anyway...just wanted to say thanks for the tips again, and if you are not yet a fan of 1st and 2nd Gen S&W semi's..try one out and you will like em....plastic be danged...these are real steel and walnut!

Last note: Pictures of gun only..I would have brought the targets home for pics of a proper range report.... but No One, but no one..will ever see these targets with holes almost off the paper. In fact I told my son...rip em up and bury them in the trash can, fast...before the RSO even glances at them.:o
