Hi,

Just got a 627 PC Short Barrel and decided to join the forum. I also have a question I can't get a good recommendation on from an experienced owner. If any of you have this gun, can you let me know what the best 357 mag loads plus moon clips that fit it you run? Especially on the moon clips and thickness and such, I'm lost my fellow S&W Owners.

Hey Old Cop...

First, welcome to the Forum. This is a great place with lots of friendly and experienced folks wiling to help.

Hi Old Cop,

Thanks for the welcome. I got into guns a little late, so I'm kind of green. Hope you guys are patient... lol

No stupid questions here, ask away and learn. I've been shooting/carrying since my rookie year in 1968 and learn something new frequently.

Re: moon clips

The problem is that there is no defined standard for the rim cutout size where the brass fits in the clip for 38/357 brass. The rim cutout on Winchester brass is thinner than other brands and will not fit the 0.025" clips so you will need the 0.020" clips. Most other brands use the thicker clips but there are 0.025" clips just for Starline brass. So which clip depends on what brass you use.
I use the TK Custom clips but they are expensive - see their website. You will also need a good moon clip loader/unloader. I like the one by BMT Equipped but it isn't the cheapest, just the best!
You do understand that the moon clips are not required to shoot you revolver? You may single load it or use speed loaders just like any other revolver.

Welcome to the FORUM! I have a 625JM. (45ACP) I like RIMZ ploy moon clips for range use. I do not know if they make clips for your model. They work so easily, and without tools. Watch what you buy in metal clips. I bought a no name brand that caused my cylinder to bind. Live & learn! Bob

Welcome. Nice revolver..... now the fun (work) begins. Holsters, belts, ammo carriers, grips all of which will accumulate until the perfect set up, for you, is acquired. Oh, by the way, S&W revolvers are like potato chips..... and so it begins again.
The crowd here is likeable, friendly and have a great deal of knowledge... great forum. That said, there is time to save yourself and your wallet....run and do not look back..... you have been warned. Do not end up like me/us....

Welcome to the forum. That's a great gun, one that I will eventually own. No, not yours, lol. If 8 rds of 357 can't do it..........

Welcome to the best gun forum I've found (so it's been my only one for three years). As Old Cop said, there is a wealth of experience and knowledge here, a lot of very nice and supportive people, and in the Lounge a lot of wonderfully strange humor.

Stick around.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.

I have an L-frame Performance Center .357, and I ordered extra moonclips from S&W. More experienced shooters than I, have said the steel they use is top quality, and so far they are holding up like new.

The clips hold all the factory ammo I've tried so far (I don't shoot Winchester). As for ammo recommendations, it happily eats everything. I've narrowed the field to 158gr FMJ in both .357 & .38SP for plinking and 125gr JHP for SD/HD.

Your gun is upside down.
