Hello - I've been lurking for a couple weeks now, contemplating the purchase of a Model 65-2. I bought it and it's awesome.

Picture of my 4" Model 65-2:

I have some questions and I wondered if you guys could help.

1. I bought some Hogue grips but now I think I want some wooden ones (the ones that came with the gun were oversized grips and were huge on my hand).

Will these work on a square-butt Model 65-2?

2. Anyone ever try Tagua holsters? Would this work for mine?

Thanks for the help; I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions.

Welcome to the forum Cat!...very nice 65-2 you got there, but I agree that you need some new grips! The k frame grips you are looking at should work fine...just double check your frame to make sure it wasn't converted to round-butt. Your gun would fit in the L frame holster but it would be a little sloppy since Ls are a bit bigger than Ks...you should be able to find a 4" k-frame holster that fits it better with no problem. Good luck!

Goodyear's...yuk.

Lotsa' grip options out there these days, I'll just give you one. I'm a big fan of Ahrend's grips; Ahrends Grips : S&W Tactical Grips. A lot of different styles and wood types and reasonably priced, great customer service.

The model 65 4" HB is one of my very favorite of the K-Frames, if I had only one choice for a S&W, it would probably be the 65. Congrats and welcome!

Yeah, the Hogue I guess is "comfortable" when shooting but I shot 50 rounds of .357 magnum and it wasn't hurting my hand or whatever. . . so I think the Hogues aren't needed [for me].

Plus wood grips are smaller and they don't stick to clothing like rubber does if you're carrying concealed. And yes, I think they just look better.

Thanks for the help.

Oh, a couple other things. . . .

So, if I wanted to smooth the serrations on the trigger, is that frowned upon (i.e. would it make the gun less valuable in the long run)? I suppose I could buy another trigger and polish it. But I can tell that if I'm going to shoot/practice with this gun a lot, those serrations are going to be a pain.

Also, my serial number is C12050xx; can anyone tell me the date it was made? I'm assuming 77 or 78.

I bought it for my birthday and I was born in 77, so I was hoping it was the same year. I felt like I had a lot in common with the gun: somewhat old, kinda big, not flashy, loud, and gets the job done. :D

65-2s were made from 1977-1982. The serial number you give is not a correct serial number for a model 65. The serial number is found on the butt & you will have to remove the grips to see it. Not sure where you got that number.

To try and answer your first question, the grips you are looking at should fit your K frame M 65-2. Enjoy your new revolver.

[Sorry, I quoted the wrong person but I appreciate your help as well.]

That number is on the ejector . . .

The serial number is 1D526xx

Thanks for the help!

I've got a 4" 65-2. They are great revolvers. Take good care of it ams you'll pass it down to your grand children.

The serial number is 1D526xx

That serial # falls in the range given for 1979-1980, which ranges from 1D45001-1D99999.

Hope this helps.

Just got the holster today; it fits the barrel and cylinder perfectly but is about 1cm too long around the hammer. Other than that, it fits like a glove
