Decided to sell a few guns this New Year and let three go to new homes. Shortly thereafter, I was perusing my local forum and lo and behold, in the "For Sale" section were these three beauties. Talked with the owner and he said he'd had the 586 and the 17 for about 30 years and couldn't recall if he'd actually shot them. We struck what I thought was a good deal (especially in California) for all three (586-3, 17-3, and 629-2) and after the 10-day cooling off period, they're home. All are excellent just need a good detail strip and cleaning. The 629 doesn't say "Mountain Gun" on the barrel, and I'm not sure the Mag-Na-Porting is factory (Any input would be appreciated). The 586 and the 17 both came in their factory boxes, the 629 was on its own. All have been shot, but they don't appear to have been shot much. I've never owned a .22lr revolver, so I'm looking forward to shooting the 17. Anyone have a good source for .22 snap caps? Sorry about the crappy pics.

The small yellow wall anchors make great and cheap snap caps for .22 guns. I think I paid something like $5 for a box of 100.

Nice group of revolvers, and in very good condition! Your 629-2 appears to be a standard 4" bbl. version that was produced for only a couple of years (629-2 introduced in 1988; 629-3 introduced in 1989). You didn't include a s/n so it's difficult to determine. I suspect that a previous owner had the barrel ported, and it does look like Mag-Na-Port did the work. I don't think it was a S&W authorized porting (like some Lew Horton models). Perhaps some Forum members that are more knowledgeable than I am will be along soon. Irregardless, you added some nice acquisitions to your collection. Enjoy!

I wasn't sure about the porting either, but I know that S&W did offer MNP on some 629s. S/N is BDW01XX.

Nice grab
They all look great
Your 629 is a mountain revolver the forerunner to the mountain guns
More than likely a previous owner sent it to Magnaport
Some people like the ports and some don’t
I happen to like the ports and sent mine to them for a little makeover
Your gun originally came with pachs not the hogues it’s wearing now
Should make a great woods gun for you
I’m betting the 17 will become a favorite of yours and probably go to the range every time you do
Congrats
