Wal-Mart is expanding in this small Texas town of 32,000 plus a 12,000 student university. We had a Wal-Mart super store and they just added gasoline pumps which has caused a minor gas war here locally.

In addition, they are opening a second Market Store a few miles away, also with gasoline pumps. The knocked down an old grocery store building and put up a new structure.

I keep hearing of them closing stores, but that is certainly not the case in this area. Just wondering if they are expanding in other areas.

Wished I'd known! I would have sent you several of ours! They're on almost every corner here. I'm in the middle of about 4 not including a Walmart Market.

They are supposed to build a 4th store within 20 minutes of me,but the old buildings haven't come down yet.Not quite sure what the thinking is,but the city council has spent a lot of time and money along with adjacent property owners promoting a walkable shopping main street right next to this, then they let Walmart in [emoji57]
The old guard and the new butting heads,I guess

A new walmart 10 miles up the road is set to open in April. But they just closed a neighborhood market store in a small community about 25 miles away.

Closing stores is partially true. Here they closed a bunch of stores........to open bigger ones. They just built anonther super store near me. Now i have 2 within 6 miles in either direction. That plus I'm sure there were some areas where they weren't making money. It happens

Walmart has closed 4 stores in our area. They were smaller old style stores. Three superstores with fuel station have replaced them.

Yes Walmart is closing stores. There is always more to the story.

They are going gangbusters, building a "Neighborhood Market" just down the street. You can't get near the St Cloud store from the 1st until the 6th or 7th of any month. As soon as the .gov money is dispersed, enormoids pushing multiple carts have small children calling directions over the piles of Fritos to the "driver." Joe

One good thing about Wal Mart is....
They are everywhere.
When I travel, I usually pick up sports t-shirts from that locations Wal Marts, to bring back home to my kids.
What's funny is, they always think it's from a gift shop, stadium, airport, or what not.
Because unfortunately their mom raised them to not appreciate a dollar.

So far it's worked for Dallas, San Antonio, Cleveland, St Louis, Louisville, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Chicago, Panama Beach, Tampa, and so on....

Poor kids - I'm gonna have to tell em one day when they are older. All those shirts daddy brought back from business trips were from Wal Mart.
:D:D:D

Forgive my barging in, but why would someone give this thread a bad rating?

Valid questions and comments all.

I must be missing something.

PS: Here, they are closing the smaller WM's and building massive ones to compete with Kroger (based here) as they are building zip code sized, we'll sell anything stores like WM. Ya need a map and a Sherpa guide.

I'm gonna bump the stars up.

Well, they opened one of those Neighborhood stores in Redwater, TX a little over a year ago, and now they've closed it. Now Redwater doesn't have a grocery store. Sorry, just sorry.

My town is about 40,000 pop. have a large Walmart with gas station for years. About a month ago on the other side of town they opened a Walmart "Market" store also with a gas station.
The local Grocery store Rouse's has three supermarkets in town all seem to do well.

That is a good point, then city gov't is forced to create a CRA tax district to support the blighted area created by empty storefronts.

Thinking of that goofy Stallone movie where every restaurant in the future was named Taco Bell.

Most of the WM neighborhood stores which are closing are located in very small towns. I looked at the list of those slated for closing in Texas, and the big majority of closing locations were towns I had never even heard of. I'm not sure what the analysis was that led them to believe that the neighborhood store concept was economically viable. It was obviously flawed.

Very near me a new WM superstore opened about two years ago. WM paid an astonishing price for the land it is located on, as they got into a bidding war over it with the Texas supermarket chain HEB. There was lot of objection from the neighboring residents, but it didn't stop WM from building it. I have been surprised that the level of customer traffic has been fairly weak since it opened, it's just never been very busy any time I have been there, even around holidays. Given its location, I expected it would have been packed all the time.

I would be a lot happier if they had an extra two-three checkers on duty at all times.

I am finally getting used to self checkout.
Of course some costumers ruin everything for others.
The other day, 2 ladies literally stop self checking items out and continued to just keep talking. The one lady even went over to the other lady's line and just kept blabbing.
Heard the quote of today from the guy right behind me.
"Hey lady - this ain't Facebook, you wanna tell everyone how your day went, go outside and do it".
That lady was so pissed when about 5 people in other lines started laughing.

They built a ''convience store'' with gas station at the Parkdale Plaza wm. Prices on sodas and candy went up---not that I'm buying them these days. Four other wms in the area and a Sam's club.

I believe they and HEBs, want a monopoly on grocery stores. Only good thing about the Pkdale plaza store, is I'm starting to find 100 rd packs of CCI Mini mags on the shelf there. Got my three yesterday. Anyone want .22 shorts? they had a ton of it yesterday.

Oh and, one of the ladies behind the deli counter, always gives me 3 free cheese sticks or jalapeño poppers when I go there. :-))
