"NEW YORK (AP) - New York City had 290 murders last year, the fewest on record in the modern era."

"The 2017 tally was the lowest since comparable record-keeping began in 1951, when the then Brooklyn Dodgers played at Ebbets Field and the subway fare was a dime."

New York City ends the year with 290 murders - SRN News

People tend to overestimate the crime rate. Not every city is like Chicago.

I'd be more interested in their overall violent crime rate. The reduction of the murder rate over the past 30-40 years can be partially attributed to advances in emergency medical care. What may have been a murder a couple of decades ago now becomes attempted murder, aggravated assault, ADW, manslaughter, etc.

This is aside from the fact that per capita figures would be more compelling than raw data.

We visited NY back in the 80's and again summer before last. NO COMPARISON. Cleaner, nicer, fresher, friendlier all around.

Crime is down because no one can afford to be there, or for that matter, go there.

My son told me his daily commuting expense from NJ to NYC is $36.00 round trip, and this does not include parking there (most days he uses a park/ride bus).

NYPD has a crime statistics portal that shows incidents are down significantly in almost every major category. Combined with an ever increasing population census that makes per/capita numbers even better than raw numbers.

Since New York City is still experiencing population growth, over a million more people than at the peak of the high-crime era of the 80s, the per-capita figures are automatically going to be even more impressive than the "raw data", i.e. the absolute numbers.

I lived in NYC for 12 years in the 1970s and early 80s. Visited briefly in 1992, and then again in 2011.

Totally different, much more pleasant, much safer environment nowadays...

It’s a nice place.

Spent a week there thru Halloween. Wonderful food, great friendly pubs...walked in the Halloween parade with a few of my son's friends dressed as Robin Hood sans bow ..picture attached, and the irony was not lost on my friends....I thought about starting a conversation about the 2nd amendment and my love of firearms, but they outnumbered me about 100 to 1.

Thank you, bigwheelzip and Absalom. That is some very impressive data, indeed.
Unfortunately the numbers can't convey that NYC is a collection of neighborhoods and neighbors, with the same pros and cons as anywhere else.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn with wonderful neighbors, and even today the people in my neighborhood care for each other.

My late mother at my Brooklyn home, captured on Google Street View 3 years ago.

I would like to know what the NYPD is doing to lower their crime rates so much. Some time ago NZ Police adopted their “broken windows” program and a few of their other initiatives. Things worked but in the last few years our crime rate has spiked again.

Even more interesting is that the NYPD’s “stop and frisk” policy has been restricted by the courts, so good on 5hem for the results.

But TBH I have no inclination to visit there.
