A friend is going through a divorce and I'm trying to help him out a little by buying a couple of his guns that his X is trying to get her hands on. Since he's a friend, I absolutely want to treat him right. One of the guns he's getting rid of is an M&P 15-22. Everything he owns is well maintained and in excellent condition, including his guns.

My real firearms interests lie with older wood and steel guns--older S&W revolvers, older 1911's, pre- 1960 military rifles, etc. As a result, I know nearly nothing about newer firearms.

First, is an M&P 15-22 a quality firearm? I own a dozen S&W handguns, but none were made more recent than 1984, and most of them significantly before that. I would use it to do Appleseed shoots, go to the range, plink, etc.

Second, what is a second hand--excellent condition--M&P 15-22 worth? It doesn't have a bunch of mods--no scope, tactical light or anything like that.

Many thanks,

You don't mention if he has any extras on the gun like scope, rail covers, or any aftermarket items.

I would agree that $ 325 to $350 would be a fair price without any extras.

My friend had a similar issue with one of his x's. I went over to his place and left with the entire load. When the dust settled, he came over to my place and got'em.

I just bought my M&P 15-22 and I absolutely love it, best investment I've made in a long time.

Oh yeah I haven't had any problems with it either, almost shot 1000 rounds in 4 days.

To answer your question, yes, the 15-22 is absolutely a quality item. It is very well made and you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it even though your interest lies in other guns. I agree that $350 is a good deal and I'd buy it right now if it was offered to me. Great gun, great price for a 15-22 in excellent condition.

Thanks to all of you for the input. I really appreciate it. I'll talk to him this afternoon.

Thanks, again, for all the input. Today I picked up his M&P 15-22 and a Springfield Armory GI 1911. In trade, I gave him a very nice, new condition S&W revolver that he wants for a pack gun. I told him that if he ever wants his guns back (after the divorce situation is settled), no problem. I'm looking for forward to shooting the 15-22.
