Well, here while back I bought my Wife a PT cruiser. A 2002 touring edition. Sure enough, just like everybody told me, a wheel bearing went out on the front.:o I didn't notice the wheel bearing being bad till I went to replace the drive axle on the same side. Since the bearing has to be pressed in and out of the steering knuckle, I took it to my buddy's garage. Got the new axle and bearing installed and it worked fine, perfectly quiet and everything. Last night when my Wife got home from work She said that it was making a noise and wondering around in the road when it crested hills. I jacked it up and checked the same wheel and sure enough, the bearing had about an inch of play top and bottom and front to back. It was about to come apart. It's back in the shop. The new bearing fell apart when they took it off. It had a grand total of about 200 miles on it. At least it ain't gonna cost me anything to get it replaced this time. I just hope they get a bearing with actual metallic balls like a real one would have.
I really miss the older vehicles where you could pack grease in the bearings and adjust the pre load.
end of rant.....:p
Peace,
gordon

I take it it was aftermarket -mind telling us where you got it? I do nearly all my own work and am always seeking to learn from others' experiences.'

Sounds like it had to be defective from the start, or wasn't installed/pressed in correctly which caused it to fail so soon. Axle nut torque must also be correct or you'll ruin a bearing before its time.
Glad you caught it before it was too late.

No offense meant, BUT.......I've heard them called PT losers---apparently for a reason. A friend had two of them as his wife "loved" them. After a few repairs and leaving her stranded in -20 F on an icy road, he said the last one was gone and she better not look at another one. Now, he's paying for a Jeep Commander................

I run a small shop, been doing automotive work for many years. Its VERY easy to damage a new bearing if you aint very very careful when pressin it in.

P.S. I think when this was discussed on this forum before, you was warned about the PT...........Not to be a nayslayer, but they are really a *** for the most part
