Guy has asked me to date a nickel m36, but swears the SN starts with an R? According to the SCSW 3ed, the only "R" prefix was used on M60 and M651? Am I missing something?

Could it be a polished model 60? Has he checked the model number stamped inside the frame behind the crane?

He swears it's a m36. Maybe it's a mis-stamped m60! That'd be neat!

Whatever it is, I'd bet it would date in the 70's. I really don't understand this fascination a lot of posters here have with knowing the date a S & W was made. The characteristics of a particular piece will give a general idea of when it was made, ie pinned barrel, lock, cylinder latch, etc.

Some of us just like knowing . . . you can live with that, can't you? ;)

Lol.... Wasn't my gun, and the guy asked me to date it for him. I wasn't going to talk him out of being curious!

Finally talked him into looking inside the crane, and guess what.... M60.
