Nickel plating, barrel replacement and recall

Hi, I have a model 586 with a six inch barrel which i would like to send to smith and wesson to have a 8 3/8ths barrel fitted from a 686. There is also a recall on the firearm. Lastly i would like to have it nickel plated at Smith and Wesson. Can you nickel plate stainless steel? Any other comments or issues i should be aware of? And if anyone knows, can i get a longer barrel or is the 8 inch variant the longest? Im new to this forum, nice to be here. Paul

I think it would be cheaper and better to just sell the 586 and buy a 8 3/8 686.
