Just picked this up from Gander Mt. reg. $229. Got it for 135.

Thoughts or experience with this one. Seemed like a good deal.

I would say you got a good deal on that. I would jump on it too. Nikon has great optics.

I have had a few and no complaints and you definitely got it at a good price. Enjoy it.

Thanks, looking forward to trying it out.

So what kind of mount would you suggest for this scope? Currently have a standard MP Sport ll. I plan on using it later on probably a 20 inch bull barrel upper when funds allow.

An offset cantilever mount is what you'll find on most AR's. This type of mount moves the scope forward, allowing you to achieve proper eye relief when you mount the rifle. My personal Sport II has the Burris PEPR mount.

Good price indeed. Glad to hear favorable reports. Need to replace my Redfield Tracker 3x9. LOL Still holds zero but am sure new glass would be an improvement.

Yeah our local Gander Mt is going out of business Dyr only now are they offering discounts enough to matter. They are at 30% off on most of their inventory that's left. Still a good selection of optics, mostly higher end. One whole display case of Leopoldo, plenty Vortex and Nikon and a few Bushnells left.

You'll like the Prostaff, and you didn't do bad on the price -- but my local Walmart has them every day for $159. Mostly, our nearest Gander Mountain has just lowered prices on most stuff to the everyday Walmart price in the going-out-of-business sale. If they'd had 'em there all along, they might not be going out...

I know, way over priced. Now that they are at 30% they are starting to clear things out.

They had a Bushnell Trophy XLT, 15X45X50mm spotting scope, that normally sells for $200 on sale for $93. Bushnell had a Father's Day $40 rebate on them, so it ends up costing me $53. Rebate runs through today, June 22, so hurry down and get one.

I bought 3 prostaffs on clearance from Cabelas some 3-4 years back. All were disappointing in clarity for their price point. I think I read that they were redesigned shortly thereafter though. Hopefully yours is new stock with better glass.

Yeah I hope so too, just looking through it in the store it looks pretty clear. We'll see.

I have a couple of the original ProStaff models (both 3-9X40) and I couldn't be happier with them. They pick up light almost like they have night vision. And they are as clear as any scope I've seen in their price range. They are good scopes around besides Nikon but Nikon certainly makes a good scope.

What's the difference between the ProStaff, Buckmaster and the 223 in 3-9x40. They all look alike but the price varies. What's up with that?

Here let me google that for you: Rifle Scopes from Nikon Happy researching. Normally I would track down all the differences, but there really is no significant difference. They're all mediocre scopes. If used for +/-3MOA purposes and at distances 200 yards and less, you'll be equally happy with all of them.

but there really is no significant difference

My understanding is that the difference is in the glass and the construction. My own personal observations bear that out. The ProStaff is not the same ProStaff that was sold 8-10 years ago. I believe the 223 is the same as the old ProStaff but don't hold me to that. It's just what I read somewhere. I can't really vouch for that.

Mediocre? If you're comparing it to a $4000 Nightforce scope I'd agree that it's mediocre. But compared to other scopes in the same price range they do pretty well IMO.

Looking at the Nikon website there are obviously differences in the discontinued Prostaff 3-9X40 models. Discontinued 3-9X40 models rated at 90% light transmission. Current production 3-9X40 rated at 98%. Probably different lens coatings.

This is what Nikon's website has to offer for comparisons.

My 2 cents-
Buckmaster is their entry level.
P-223 has a specific reticle and finger turrets.
