A friend has a SW NM#3 in 44 Russian for sale. We know that all of this model are considered antiques under US law. A fellow from England would like to buy it and have it shipped there claiming that as it is an antique it would be legal.
Does any one have any pertinate information on (1) the status of said gun under English and EU law, (2) The legality and procedures for shipping same.

British law is strange. I don't know much about the details, but I do know that official classification as an antique involves both the age of the gun and the cartridge it fires, i.e., it can be old but if it fires a cartridge on the prohibited list, it is not considered an antique. I am sure someone in Great Britain will read your request and tell you the story.

A list of the calibers regarded as antique in the UK can be found at http://vintageguns.co.uk/articles/firearms-law (calibre spelled english way!)

All S&W No3's in .32-44,.38-44, .44 American, .44Russian are antiques and need no authority to possess. However No3's in .44-40 and .38-40 need a section 5 lisence. A No1 in .22rf is not an antique despite being made in 1857! But a No2 and a No 11/2 in .32 rf are.

Have fun trawling the obsolete caliber list!
