My understanding is they must ship overnight

A rifle can be shipped by USPS last I heard, by a non FFL, but not a handgun.
FEDEX no longer accepts handguns from non FFLs.
UPS will accept handguns frim non FFLs, but you will need to take it to a UPS hub.
