I spent 33 years as a shooter and collector without an AK. Now I bought two in just a few months span.

After the 56-1S under folder, I just found an equally cheap 56 S fixed stock for the same amount of $ 650.-

The folding stock rifle is sexier imo, but I bet the fixed stock is more shooter friendly

Thanks for sharing. There are different opinions but I have always felt it is a really good, no-nonsense platform. Surprisingly accurate, as well. Easy to disassemble and clean. Ammo used to be cheap years ago (along with the guns).

I am not fluent on these, but still have a like new MAK90. Had two, sold one. They are surprisingly accurate; chrome-lined barrel, good receiver.

You got a very good deal on the under-folder. Again, I am not current on the market, but thought those were going for around $1600.00 USD not long ago.

Oh, to have a time machine! Back in the late 80's or early 90's (pre-ban), I bought an under folder like yours NIB for $250 at a local pawn shop. IIRC, he was selling them like hot cakes. I remember it having 2 of the banana magazines. I shot it a few times. The under folder stock was not real pleasant to shoot. Around a year later, I traded it even up for an Italian made Beretta 92F. I think it was priced at $650. This was back when you could buy a SKS and case of ammo for less than $200.

I wish I had bought a half dozen of the AK's or didn't get rid of the one I had!

A quick check on GB shows bidding around $2,500.00. And a separate listing for another @ $3,500.00 with no takers. I guess real price is somewhere between the two.

I bought mine a fair number of years back and promptly took it out of CA to OR retirement home. Had no idea they were worth something.

Yep, some are worth a lot to AK collectors.

This is a semi auto.

:eek

The original stamped AK was a failure. The Soviets hadn't perfected the process to stamp and weld the receivers, and went back to a milled receiver. SO even as a semi-auto re-weld, that one is a unicorn. Even the mag is rare.

It wasn't until the 1960's that the stamped receiver was perfected and used on the AKM and subsequent variants.

the chinese variants used slightly thicker metal in the stamping process... 1.5mm vs 1mm or something like that... I have an old NHM that is one of the crazy over stamped receivers that were modified to make it to American soil with the A.W.B. well built rifle

Congratulations. The Chinese produced a very reliable semi variant (not all of the commercial ones here in the States are).

To improve the shootability (if that's a word) wrap the arm(s) of the folder in paracord. Was more or less a standard mod here in the States when AKs were cheaper than dirt.

You can thank me after you crank it up in a range session. :)
