My best friend is considering moving to Boone, North Carolina. While we both have done some traveling up around east TN and west NC, I was wondering how that area/city of NC is. Anyone from around there got any advice?

Having traveled there often from Raleigh... it is beautiful but sometimes seems that the roads are too overloaded with tourists and students. Personally I like to visit and then get out of there.

My mom & dad retired in Flat Rock, not too far from Boone. NCTexan is correct pertaining to the over abundance of tourists.
Beautiful country though.

Boone, and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. Boone itself is a college town, and does attract a fair amount of tourists. But, it has the resulting cultural/shopping ammenites, and you don't need to go too far outside of Boone to back to the real 'country.' I'd live there in a heartbeat.

We were married in Blowing Rock, a few miles away. Love the area and nearby Tennessee mountains.

I own the best Restaurant in the area, incidentally. Bob's Dairyland, in nearby Roan Mountain, TN. I'd love it if you would stop in and introduce yourself, nice to meet some forum members!

Boone, NC is in Watauga County, NC, known as 'the high country' because of the elevation, which is above 3,300, is the highest city of its size (10,000+) east of the Mississippi River. Due to this height above sea level, the weather is much closer to that of New England than of the surrounding areas. Summers are usually cool and moist, with frequent rains being common. Winters are COLD, usually with lots of snow and ice and wind, and temperatures that can go below 0 degrees a number of times, depending on the severity of that particular winter season.

There is good access either from the East via Hgwy 421, which is 4 lanes divided, or from the South via Hgwy 321, which is 4 lanes divided. This make it easy for everyone, residents and tourists alike, to access the area by car, which leads to congestion, especially during the summer when it is HOT 'off the mountain', and in the Fall, when the leaves are changing color.

ASU (Appalachian State University) is a small school with an excellent academic reputation and a very good football team, that beat the Michigan Wolverines (#5 nationally) in 2007 on national TV and caused an upheveal in Michigan. There are numerous cultural activities that take place in the area, primarily in the summer, and outdoor sports are also good during that time. There is a public golf course in Boone, a good medical community, lots of excellent restaurants, and plenty of sight-seeing opportunities. Snow skiing in the wintertime, along with snowboarding are quite popular and people come from afar to participate.

The nearby town of Blowing Rock is also a delightful place to visit/be, and since the two cities are only 8 miles apart, it can be considered to be one and the same. The Blue Ridge Parkway, part of the National Park Service passes through between Boone and BR, and is great for a place to drive, sight-see, and have a picnic.

Googel 'boone, nc' for more information about the town and the area. It is a good place to live, if you can stand the winters.
