Cherokee County, in western North Carolina, has officially/legally declared itself to be a Gun Sanctuary County.
The county "intends to defy attempts by federal or state government to enforce strict gun control measures."
I won't go into detail here. Interested forum members may read about it by clicking here.
For those not familiar with it (this includes a lot of North Carolinians), Cherokee County is as far west in the state as you can go. It's rough country, and sparsely populated...less than 30,000 souls live there. I know some good people who live there, but they'll be the first to admit they're somewhat clannish and standoffish. They're also very protective of county residents. They respect the privacy of folks, and often don't take kindly to busybody outsiders.
Cherokee County and the County Seat of Murphy are also sort of famous for other reasons...reasons I won't go into here. But if you have a good memory for certain events in 2003, a bit of research will lead you to the stories.
