A friend of mine asked me last week if I knew anybody who wanted a .410 shotgun. An acquaintance of his was selling an old Winchester, model unknown. I asked to see it and that was arranged.
Turned out to be a Winchester Model 42 pump .410, manufactured in 1954. You can tell it isn't new, but you have to look real close. Near perfect metal and wood, no modifications, only the smallest little handing marks, beautiful fiddleback pattern in the buttstock.
Asked the gentleman how much he needed to have for it. He told me that someone had told him 20 years ago that they are worth at least $600, so he wanted $700 for his. He walked away with 7 Franklins and I went home with one of the sweetest Model 42's I've ever seen.
Watching several on GunBroker now. One with altered buttstock with current bidding over $600. Some in fair to good condition are getting bids over $1,000. One recent sale at $1100-plus for one in good condition with recoil pad added. Some in very good plus condition with starting bids in the $2,000-plus range. None of them are really equal to this one.
For those not familiar with the Model 42, it is the "little brother" of the Model 12. Pump action, take-down design, highly valued by hunters and collectors everywhere. Mine is a 26" Modified, which I'm thinking would make an excellent quail gun and just about perfect for rabbits and other small game.
I'm thinking that I did alright! Sometimes things just turn up, and sometimes we are able to take advantage of the situation. Not looking for a shotgun at the time, but I wasn't about to walk away from this deal.
By the way, same friend refered a guy to me last year with a S&W Model 19 (TT, TH, TS, pinned & recessed, 95%), an older Ruger Single Six Convertible (.22/.22 magnum, with holster & belt plus 200 rounds of ammo), and a beater Colt Single Action Army (2nd Generation, 1956 gun, plus 100 rounds of .45LC ammo). Picked up all three for $1,000. The Model 19 went into the safe. The Ruger is going to a grandson. The Colt SAA received $500 in replacement parts and gunsmithing, then sold for $1900.
I think I'll continue hanging around this guy. Seems like his buddies all have some nice guns!
