The serial number should have a S or a N in front of it. The other numbers are assembly numbers for the factory and don't mean much now. HPs are usually some great shooters.

Add: The number on the butt is the serial number.

YES,THE N PRECEEDS THE SER. NUMBER. PICKED THE 28 UP A FEW WEEKS AGO. SHOOTS GREAT. have been leaving the RUGERS at home. think i need another 28 to keep the first one company. thanks for the reply W.C.

Since your revolver is a 28-3 the serial number will begin with N, and if the serial number is N2941-- it was made in 1976 +/- a year. It is right in the middle of the range for 1975-1977 per SCSW.

A23 is a fitters or inspectors mark. The 5 digit number is an assembly number stamped on the yoke, left side of the botton of the grip frame under the stocks (right?) and on the inside of the sideplate. This serves to keep fitted components together during finishing and prior to final assembly. Other than this that number means nothing. Mentioning it is "on the butt" is misleading because when most read this they assume you mean the bottom of the butt where it can be seen with the stocks on. The number "on the butt" is the serial number and includes whatever letter amy precede the numbers.

Why did you X out the first and last digits of the assembly number?
