I'm so glad I live in a free state! Would piss me off to have to deal with all that.

Did you move? Your profile shows Erie, PA.

Does NYS permit allow you to carry any firearm or is it for a specific gun?

I ask because my family lived in upstate NY in the 50's. My Dad had a carry permit; it has his photo and the serial # of a 22 revolver and its description, thumb print.....

from 1957!

It has not expired yet, "...until revoked..." and I don't think it has been revoked yet.

Hand written on the bottom is "Investigation OK".

I came across it last year in a box of old photos. Seems the permits are still the same.

Depending on the counties, as each county can do things as they wish as long as they stay within the state parameters. (that can make for a lot of confusion)

a lot are still the old style paper permit with thumb print and photo, but some counties are going to a credit card style type permit for wallet carry.

The libs are always trying to make the permits renewable after a 3-5 year period. We fight them tooth and nail because we know that as innocent as it sounds it will get expensive, time consuming and much harder to renew. (Think of the way NYC does it)

It my case my permit came out in 72 and I have quite a few guns on it. They go on an amendment sheet with an embossed stamp and IT MUST be carried when any gun that is on it is in your possession out of your house.

Many of you from other states have no idea how obnoxious (only word I can use to describe) the process for being granted the NYS pistol permit.

1) References...all notarized
2) Proof of pistol education course (I agree with this requirement, just don't shoot yourself in the hand or your wife in the leg)
3) Interview 1 by county PD
4) Interview 2 with judge (depending on judge)
5) Wait for decision and permit to be processed.

The worst part, in my mind, is you can't touch a pistol in the state of NY at your FLGS without a permit. And you can't get a permit unless you have a pistol (with serial number) on hand to be included on the permit. This means a new gun buyer can look at a self defense firearm, has to pay for it (without holding it), and include the bill of sale paperwork in order to be granted a permit. He won't be able to actually touch what he purchased until after he pays for it and NYS grants the license.

My local judge (near West Point, NY) denied be full carry (what NYS calls "Unrestricted). She did allow my buddy full carry, despite the fact that we are both US Army Officers with no criminal records, with combat tours, who have been selected for competitive positions at the United States Military Academy. At least I've had my permit for 2 years now--I can submit an ammendment and request she give me full carry like she gave my friend.

Excellent. Will be glad to return to Oklahoma.

As I stated in my post above yours "as each county can do things as they wish as long as they stay within the state parameters." The cop shop that does the investigation can make things nasty, but the judge that has to sign it can try and put restrictions on it.

Now if you got a liberal judge that could get interesting. I have seen limitations put on so called "Carry permits" that include type of gun, length of barrel, amount of shots it can fire, caliber, where and when it can be carried, how it must be stored. That could be your judge and in the next town just over the county line you get a full unrestricted permit with no headaches at all.

As for me I have had a full carry since I got it in 1972.

Absolutely agree. Nothing I wrote should be interpreted as countering your point.

In Orange County...those were the procedures. To further illustrate...my friend and I who live in Orange County (15 minutes west of West Point). Same judge gave us different restrictions. My fellow officers who live on West Point, had a different judge and were given unrestricted licenses (two of these fellow officers were arrested in their youth).

Would be nice to see more standardization.

They really haven't changes much since 1911,,more restrictions and paperwork,,more delays,,but the idea is the same. I just did a repair transaction with gent and his NYS P/P was from 1940. Looked the same as mine, but his picture is better.

With the pistol registered to a person and only that person,,many are placing the gun onto an other family members pistol permit at the same time. The law does allow for this.

That way if one should pass away or be deemed incompetent to own the firearm,,the other family member maintains possession of it.

Without it, it can end up in police property waiting for an executor to sell it to a permit holder or an FFL in the event of a death. Something not everyone knows they can do.
And they only have one year to make that move. After that it's deemed a 'nuisance weapon' in NYS and is destroyed.

Same gun being on separated permits also gets rid of the fuzzy area of the legalitys of letting the wife/husband take a couple of shots with the gun out in the field even though one doesn't have it on their personal P/Permit.

Welcome to The Empire (State) speedshooter.

Good luck on getting your NYS permit. In central NY it is currently taking about 9 months. Look at the positive side when you do get it, it will be CCW. :)

Orange County is a mess, there's too many judges signing off on the permits, and your fate is determined by which judge you get. Totally unfair.
Just across the Hudson River in Putnam, we have ONE judge signing permits, and he's pro gun. The only people who don't have unrestricted permits are the new applicants, and after 6 months or so, they get their restrictions removed.
I'd like to see standardization also, but not what other counties have, I'm fine with what I have. If the other counties want to come up to our standard that's fine, but we're not being dragged backwards.

Holy ****!

Never realized there was so much hoop-jumping involved in getting a permit in our neighboring state.

It actually makes the Mass. permit process look easy.

I used to live in NY and had a permit for several years. Could only carry for purpose permit issued for. Only purpose allowed then was target shooting and hunting. Now I live in AZ! What a difference! 2nd amendment in NY is nothing but a bad joke! Probably will be until they get the Dem. politicians kicked out. I'll never go back...really didn't get out quick enough!

It has to be on your permit!!

guess I better go and see if I can change the profile(kinda forgot all about it)

I read about all the hoops through which some people have to jump, and all I can think is, "damn, I'm glad that I live in Indiana!" We may be a bunch of fly-over hicks (according to some people), but we sure don't have to put up with that kind of socialist garbage!

Makes me love Wyoming that much more. To carry concealed, all you need is a revolver or pistol if you're a resident and 21.

I received my permit from Westchester County, NY last month. It took 3.5 months to process my application even though they said it could take up to six months. All things considered I was pleasantly surprised by turnaround time

It is somewhat backwards that you can't touch a handgun in NY state wo a permit but need to supply a serial number of a gun that you intend to own once the permit is approved (hopefully). I went to visit a friend in the friendly state of AZ to shoot and handle various pistols before selecting a my first gun (pc 686). Just a thought for you if you have the ability to visit another state with fewer restrictions.

In Oneida County (Central NY) it is currently taking about 3-4 months to get your permit. Oh, they still have all the restrictions depending on who you are or what you put down for use on your application. If you put down hiking you can carry it any where just about, as we all kwow you can be hiking just about anywhere. :)
