A minister friend and I decided to have a "staff meeting" at the local indoor pistol range. Unfortunately last night a dog bite him on the arm so this morning he first had to make a detour to the doctor for a tetanus shot. When he arrived at the range he had brought two boxes of 130 gr. .38 Specials, a box of .357 Magnums and a box of .45 ACP ball. I happily supplied the other necessary items, i.e., handguns! Turns out he'd never fired a handgun in his life. So... I started him out with my little 18-3 with which he learned the basics of handgun marksmanship. Unlike some folks I've tried to help learn to shoot, my friend listened and payed attention resulting in very rewarding results when he began live fire. He started firing at 5 yds. using 3" bullseyes. He did well. The targets were then moved to 7, 10 and 15 yds. He did very well, especially considering that today was the first time he'd been to a range or fired a handgun.

Next we tried out my 66-3 w/ .38 Specials. Welll... we were going to try it out with that load. However he picked up the box of magnums. That first round was a handful. He decided after 12 rounds that he'd like to try something else. I don't blame him. That little 66 was a hammer! God help whatever or whoever you point it at because it is blisteringly accurate. But with full power magnum loads it is a real handful!

I gave him my 4" 28-2 and he acted like he'd died and gone to heaven. His groups at 5 and 7 yds. were about the size of a nickel... maybe a quarter firing SA. Firing DA he still kept his rounds well within 2 inches. We moved on out to 15 yds. where his SA groups ran 2 -3 inches for 12 shots (twice around the cylinder) and about the same for DA. I think if I'd been willing to go along with it, he'd have bought that 4" 28. However I just can't help it. I want to keep it. It is a exceedingly accurate revolver!

I had a Rock Island 1911 that had been nicely customized as well as a box stock Springfield Armory GI 1911-A1. We very quickly went through the one box of 230 gr. ball that I had in my shooting bag. So... we bought another box of ammo and he shot the 1911's. I must say I was surprised at how well he did with the RIA. It is a very accurate pistol. I can keep 50 shots inside of 4 inches at 25 yds. shooting from a standing position. He was able to keep all but two of his shots in the head of a silhouette target at 25 yds. I think if I'd have had another 100 rounds of .45 ACP, he'd have very happily keep right on shooting those 1911's.

I've been a full time vocational pastor for 30 years. During that time I've met a lot of fellow pastors who play golf, tennis, etc. I've met many who also hunt and fish. When my friend asked about my handguns I thought it'd be good to see if he'd like shooting them. It looks like he will now be shopping around and buying a pistol for his own use. How about that! A brother minister is converted to being a pistolero! How cool is that? I've seen many churches grow and those who were excited about their faith in Christ invited others to share with them. Maybe this would be a good way to bring more folks both male and female into the experience of owning and enjoying using handguns and rifles, etc.

Kudos to you, Bruce! I taught a friend and fellow church member to shoot several years ago, but I need to get more folks involved in it. Maybe this spring sometime(We can't shoot much this time of year up here).
