Marines at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan will lose a key daily meal starting Saturday, causing some to forgo a hot breakfast and others to work six-plus hours without refueling on cooked food, according to Marines at the base and Marine Corps officials.

The midnight ration service — known there as "midrats" — supplies breakfast to Marines on midnight-to-noon shifts and dinner to Marines who are ending noon-to-midnight work periods. It's described as one of the few times the Marines at Leatherneck can be together in one place.

My son is a private contractor there and almost every morning (night for him) I talk to him via skype and haven't heard this yet. I'll ask him next time.
He's out of the Marines and prefers this base to work.

I can't believe that is true. At least I hope it's not. Here's hoping "jlrhiner" has it right.

I believe it is logistical, not political.

The drawdown simply means that cooks have to leave before trigger pullers.

Dig a little deeper and try to get to the reality. Don't stop at the sensational.

Exactly. I guess the alternative is to make the civilian support personel the last ones out? And when a few of them get blown up or beheaded because there were no military to guard them ( but at least the military guys had hot food and mid-rats right up until they stepped on the plane ), how would that go over?

Obviously the troops have no say in this, but many people, military and civilian alike, need to remember that war is unpleasant, and you might have to live on MRE's for a little while occasionally. You might not even be able to hit up the Rec center for nightly Xbox games or surfing the net.

With the 'progress' that we've enjoyed in technology, bored Army wives back home with a hotline to the FRG, email, Skype, etc, I really don't think this country could win WWII today. Can you imagine the outrage after Normandy or Bastogne, after Joe had a chance to phone or email the wife unit about the cold, or wading through surf with the enemy shooting at them? The horror.

I was just skyping my son at that base and he said that hot food part closed between midnight and five. We got cut off about a minute ago. He's tired and busy. Our tax dollars at work!

When in "the bush" during my tour in Vietnam, 68 through 69, we were issued one box of c rations per day. We were ordered to carry 2 long rats in case we ran out of food but could not eat them unless ordered to under pain of an article 15. Of course, the troops ate the long rats first, since they tasted a lot better than c rations which meant we had to scrounge up a lot of long rats when we got back into Vandergrift Combat Base rather than have a lot of article 15s on our hands!

If I got three meals a day while in the field I thought I was doing well. Hot field chow was a luxury.

Things sure have changed since I was in the Army. If you were in the field you rarely got three hot meals a day unless you heated your C-rats yourself.

It's got nothing to do with Obama and his policies. It's ONE hot meal out of 4, midnight chow. It's SOP for withdrawing from a location. They're going to get MRE's which are chock full of calories. The ones complaining are most likely the spoiled brats of this latest generation, who don't understand a whole lot about operations during drawdown. Nothing new here.

For what it's worth, my kid didn't make a big fuss about it. He said personally he never goes there that late to eat personally, and he is tight with the Marines and contractors and gave no impression of anybody making a big deal about it that he's seen. His company did a massive trimming of employees and he was glad to keep a job AND be at the base of choice. So, I guess it's just thinning out there. That's coming from a guy who's living there.

Well, from the front lines at wonderful Bagram Airfield we get a reprieve from the MRE's at midnight until July now. The cut backs will affect the civilian cooks/support. There are very few actual military cooks at Bagram, and they "supervise". I spoke with the dining managers that run the chow hall near the transit tent city and passenger terminal. Both said they serve over 1,000 meals each a night! That equals a lot of tonnage of MRE's shipped in.
