I bought a very used Model 10-6 awhile back and I'm just noticing a problem with it. I figure I have a little over 100 rounds through it and I'm noticing that it is occasionally very hard to pull the trigger in double action...once through that cycle, it goes back to normal. I've been trying to count and see if there's a pattern but I can't really tell. It's like something is out of time, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas where to start looking?

It could be a number of things. I'd start by cleaning the cylinder and back of the barrel really well. Remove any build-up and scrub the chambers with a chamber brush. Bore brushes are smaller and don't always get all the gunk out. It's a good idea to take the brush and rod to the range with you and give the chambers an occasional dry brushing.

Next time you notice a heavy trigger pull, stop and open the cylinder. Look at the front for scrape marks and check the fired cases/loaded rounds to see if any are slightly protruding.

ADD some marks to the cylinder flutes

Next time you notice a heavy trigger pull, stop and open the cylinder. Look at the front for scrape marks and check the fired cases/loaded rounds to see if any are slightly protruding.

Put a small strip of masking tape in one of the flutes ( my choice would be top right - before next chamber coming up) to aid in identifying which chamber the problem appeared at.

Then you can open and examine as mentioned earlier post.

If you do not identify any problem - leave the tape in the flute.
Next time the problem occurs look to see if tape is in same or different location.

Instead of tape a grease pencil would leave a REMOVABLE mark. .

I would suggest that you take out all the internal parts, clean them and lubricate them.

All really great ideas....A major cleaing was on my list anyway...

I'm going for it today, if the wife doesn't have a million things to do for me..

If the nose of the hand is sticking out too far forward, it can sometimes catch on a case rim and cause that problem. The next time it happens, see which case is coming up next and look for a small ding on the rim next to the ratchets.

Does this happen when first shooting and the gun is cold? If it only occurs after shooting some and the gun is warmed up, I would look at the front of the cylinder for a bright spot. If you see one, then the barrel and cylinder may be rubbing and you have endshake.

I once had a "Frankengun" issued to me by a security firm, a 4" M&P pre-Model 10. It had been put together from parts from all over. Similar problem to the OP's, the front of the cylinder would wipe against the rear top of the bbl on one chamber. The action would carry the cylinder through this 'hindrance' and safely fire the weapon, but I would close the cylinder so this 'wiped' chamber would be the last of 6 to fire, if necessary. Perhaps this is the OP's problem...

Give it a total , detailed strip down and cleaning ... clean every part , nook and cranny . Then good lubrication .
Now see if problem still happens .
You would be amazed how many guns I've fixed doing that ... a lot of em just have build up crud (old oil+powder) and it's all they need .
Scrub areas with good solvent , old toothbrushes or small brass brush to remove hardened crud .

I've got A 19-4 that I got used in 2000.It shot perfect for about 15 yrs then started to sporadically lock up on random charge holes. The lockup got increasingly bad and I found that the cylinder locking bolt was sometimes only partially moving into the frame on certain occasions when pulling the trigger and at other times wasn't moving at all.I took the gun apart and found that when I looked at the bolt spring that it had a slight kink in it.I replaced the spring and while I was inside the guns internals I looked at all the other springs and found that the rebound slide spring had been cut down by 3 coils.I replaced that spring too. Finally I put a new trigger in the 19 and have not had a problem since.I don't know if this helps but it was a crazy problem that developed in my really nice model 19-4.

Is it possible this is the reason it was sold? Since you said it's "very used" it's possible the above suggested good and total cleaning will fix the problem. Good luck.
