Is this for real? I saw a 2" Model 60 in a pawn shop that has adjustable target sights and a large front sight blade, like a Model 34 snub. This does not seem like a very useful set-up, in my opinion. It is certainly uncommon. The barrel is not pinned.

Is anybody familiar with this configuration? I am posting from the BBerry and don't have my S&W Catalog handy. Any info or pics are appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Model 60 target - 3" barrel with target sights. It has turned out to be a VERY useful trail gun:

Thanks for the replies everybody. Interesting. The pawn shop put a price of $625 or $635 on this thing. It may be odd, but the price is ridiculous. My guess is that it will be on the shelf for awhile if anybody is searching for one of these.

EDIT: Apparently, many people think that the price is fine. I stand corrected...but I wouldn't pay it.

I used to have one exactly like Dale 53's. Wish I still did. It shot like a laser.

And don't be too quick to knock a price over six bills on an odd Smith. It might move right quick.

thats not really a bad price they sale for that are more when u see them they are pretty rare now days i only seen 3 sale on the auction sites in the last year

Hi, if the one at the pawn shop is the 2" version in the photo above, it is one of 660 made for a distributor (Ashland Arms) in 1986. I agree the price you saw is in the range of current market values for this gun. It's more a collector's item but probably will shoot well too.

Yes, it looked just like the one above; however, it had the small wood grips.

I agree that price is too high. Uncommon J frames do not command the same prices as equally uncommon K and N frames. Also, I know what the book says about how many were made, but it seems to me they show up far to frequently for those numbers to be correct. There have been several threads about them in last couple years. Here's one I found at a pawn shop...

I carried a Chiefs Special Target from the time they came out in 1985 until the release of the 357 Magnum Model 60 in 1996. 660 were manufactured.

I wish S&W would release a 2" 357 Magnum Chiefs Special Target. I found that the adjustable sight picture on my older one made me much more accurate out to the 25 yard line.

The asking price is not unreasonable considering the rare nature of this model 60 variation.

Note that S&W also made the blued Model 36 with ajustable sights. It was available in both 2"" and 3" barrel length. Initially they were cataloged as Chief Special Target and later carried the designation model 55.

I've put a lot of rounds thru my 2" M60 and found it still shoots better than I can.

I would have actually preferred a 4" barreled Model 60 but that wasn't what was offered. However, it turned out to shoot much better than I anticipated. I have shot many scores 96 or better on the timed fire target at 25 yards.

I have also scored a few bunnies with it. Solid base wadcutters over 3.5 grs of Bullseye do great work on edible small game (bunnies and grouse). Worn crossdraw (so as not to scratch a shotgun stock) makes a dandy field companion to my Beretta Silver Snipe over/under. I have taken cottontails, snow shoe rabbits, and grouse with this. You hardly know you have it with you until you need it. The double underlugged barrel adds weight forward for good holding. I have a S&W 4" .32 H&R magnum. It doesn't hold nearly as well as the 3" barrel (the 4" is a slim barrel kit gun model 631).

I consider it (the 3" Model 60 Target) a Premier using gun...

I have one of the snubbie J-frames with adjustable sights,I bought it the first of last year. They are dandy little revolvers.I agree that they do show up quite often.

another one...

Here's a pic of my 60-1 from the mfg. run for Ashland. I've never shot it, not that its a collector gun or anything since it has been shot. I've just not gotten around to doing it even though have had it for several years now.

I think I will shoot it this week so I can justify having it.

While I like adjustable sights, that front blade is just a bit ridiculous :D

But the idea is good, you could put some tougher rear sight on it and have a good utility gun.

I posted some pics of mine in a new thread. I guess that front sight has to be that tall with a short barrel. My 2" M-34-1 has a similar height sight, and I still have to screw the rear sight all the way down to get it close to point of aim.
