At a recent show I met up with some ODD Size Scope Rings.

I am familiar with 1" / 3/4" / and 30mm.

The rings were on a 1" tube scope. A fellow waking the aisle with rifle and a "just-bought" used scope stopped at my table. He wanted to borrow screwdrivers to adjust ring spacing and mount the scope. It would mean easier carrying for him. (I sell screwdriver sets and have a set open for display and use by anyone with a need.)

When tightening the rings after adjusting their position we notices something STRANGE! We noticed that while the top/bottom rings still had quite a gap - the rings were in contact with scope body at the edges of the rings, but not at the center (confirmed with a slip of paper sliding freely in gap). Further tightening (done by owner) brought the rings into seemingly full contact.

The rings apparently were under sized and relied on deformation when tightening for full contact.

Glad that I did NOT own those rings and the scope

Has anyone else encountered seemingly undersized rings.

They sound like they might be 7/8" rings. Some of the older scopes back in the WWII and early post-WWII, like the Lyman Alaskan, had 7/8" tubes. I still have a couple of those old scopes and various types of rings/bases for them.

In the late 1980's Redfield made a 25 mm scope and ring set. A friend still has one, the scopes were of very high quality and had a few new features that never went into production on other models. Ivan

German Pecar Scopes circa 1963

My father purchased two if these scopes, 3-7 Var in the '60's when we were in Germany and they have 26mm tubes and I have the rings, one pair are for Sako and the other for a Winchester M70 base. The problem with the rings on the M70 is that the upper ring half is aluminum and the lower half steel and they would never hold zero with the .270 recoil. When I inherited the gun and replaced the Pecar with a Burris and all steel rings, that problem went away. IDK how these would fit with a 1" tube body, other than it would not be "right".
Back to the original post.. If they don't fit, a bigger hammer is not the solution here....
