I got a phone message from a nice fellow on Monday telling me that, due to suspicious activities, my social security number was suspended. He wants me to call him to clear things up.

I’m not sure having my social security number suspended is a bad thing: Must mean I’m not just another number!! Maybe I’m truly off the grid!! Not such a bad thing is it?

So, does this mean I don’t have to pay taxes anymore?

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a good thing, but I’m interested in the wisdom of the Forum: is it a good thing to have your social security number suspended?

I'm guessing your post is tongue-in-cheek. This can be a very frightening call to someone who does not know. My gal, originally from another country but now an American citizen, got such a VM message on her phone and called me, panic stricken, from work. I calmed her down and told her to ignore the message, that it was bogus. She just told me she and her sister both received a similar message last week.

Sad, the limits some people (correct term?) will stoop to, frightening others to get $.

I have always wondered how these criminals avoid calling other criminals and racketeers just like themselves, who would arrange a meeting to “pay” their demands with the plan of shooting the caller in the head and taking his or her money.

I spoke to a police officer about this and was told rarely do these scams involve any face-to-face (although they occasionally do). It primarily to get money wired or bank account info.

That is probably among the top 4 or 5 scams which are so common today. There will always be a small percentage of those receiving such calls who will fall for it, and that is all the scam artists need to be successful.

My all time favorite scam is a call I got from someone claiming to be a process server who was going to serve me a summons for a lawsuit against me. But if I paid him something, then he would lose the papers and I wouldn't be sued.

Hopefully you didnt file your taxes yet.
Maybe you could get all your money back that you paid in. Since your suspended.
Worth a shot, lol.

My wife and I are beside ourselves with worry. She will be sent to prison in 10 days for IRS infractions, and my Social Security has been cut off. I'll have to go back to work; I wonder what those scam outfits pay part time seniors.;):D

I posted this before. I had my grandson call me to tell me he was in jail and needed me to send a gift card to get him out. After about 3 minutes of back and forth, he called his grandfather, who was prepared to get the gift card and send to him, a dirty name! There are two problems with this: 1) I don't have any children. 2) Even If I did have a child, I can almost bet my grandson would not have a heavy Spanish accent!

My 91 yr old mom got the same call last week and called me really concerned. When I told her it was a scam and to ignore it she was really relieved. I just hope Karma catches up to those individuals tenfold.

I talked to my VA advocate just yesterday. ( in person ) He pulled up my records, and says, "It shows here that you are deceased." I said, Then my wife is a very wealthy widow. He had things corrected in moments....

Gotta wonder.....
