Old 219 zipper bullets

Good cartridge, ballistically the equal of or even exceeding (in a strong rifle like a Winchester hi-wall) present day .223 ballistics.

I was helping out at the gun club, there was a silly-wet competition going.
One if the shooters had a Contender in 219 Zipper. I thought it was very slick.

That box of bullets is cool. Can we get a pic of the box open ?

I'll get one this afternoon as the bullets themselves are pretty neat.

In a box of Lyman loading dies for 310 tools were a few dies for full length sizing in an arbor press. One was for 219 Zipper. I loaned it to a guy to reform 30-30 brass, but in his ignorance all he could do was crush brass. If you want to make brass, start with 25-35! I also have 219 Donaldson Wasp dies, that's an "Improved" form of 219 Zipper, right up there with 220 Swift in velocity.

Before WWII, 4000 fps was a very big deal, but now I do that with the little 22 BR case! We have stronger brass, and better powder selections!

The problem with the bullets in the OP is the jackets are too thin, they won't take the higher velocities of 22-250 or even a very hot 223. they just explode, usually 10 to 50 feet in front of the barrel! I have a couple boxes of Sisk 50 grain bullets from the same time frame that would handle up to and including 220 swift.

For quite a few years my "Grail" gun was a Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp, set up with an Unertle scope. Never did have an opportunity to buy one, although an acquaintance had one. I had to settle on a Remington 700 in 22-250 (with a Douglas stainless barrel in 1-9" twist). A lot of "dogs" fell to that rifle out in So. Dakota.

Some years ago I had five .219 Zippers, one on a Krag action, one Remington rolling block, one Remington Hepburn, and two Winchester hi-walls.

I don't know when new Winchester Zipper brass was last available, but it's been a long time. Forming brass from new Winchester .25-35 brass was the preferred method, but .30-30 brass could also be used. Several steps and dies were required.

I don't anneal any brass; when it's worn out I replace it, but formed .219 Zipper cases had to annealed if you were going to get any case life out of the brass.

The .219 Zipper is an interesting cartridge and I enjoyed doing all that was necessary to shoot my rifles years back, but they've been gone for some time and I don't miss any of them.

You don't see too many Winchester Model 64's around in 219 but they did offer it in that chambering. Probably not the best rifle for a varmit caliber.
Marlin 336's as well.

Neat old boxes of bullets. Great old cartridge. It still does just as well as more 'modern' examples inspite of it being somehow obsolete.
