This is an abandoned bridge across the North Fork of the Saline River in Garland County, Arkansas. A friend took this picture in under less than favorable lighting conditions but I thought it turned out quite well.
The Garland County Road Department built the bridge in 1931. It was abandoned after the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Dept. replaced it with a new bridge not even close to the aesthetic appeal of what it replaced. My friend was standing under the new bridge to capture this image.
By the way, I'm wishing the fleas of a thousand camels should infest the armpits of the miscreant graffiti clowns who defaced this fine old artifact, and then hope the fleas migrate southward on their person.
My friend described the effort to take this picture. "It was necessary to negotiate a strip of rip-rap to set up this shot, causing a deep seated fear of a misstep which would result in broken Nikon stuff and even worse, overwhelming the tensile strength of essential skeletal parts, plus severely bruising others. I am pleased to report that none of the above occurred."
They don't make bridges like they used to.
