Went to the range the other day and had problems with sight picture due to macular degeneration. Right eye good, left eye bad. One of the guys at the LGS recommended painting the front sight ramp. He used a sort of brownish-pink paint on his revolver front sight ramp. I tried white paint and it helps but not optimum. Any thoughts, recommendations? Any help would be appreciated.

Old eyes for sure

I'm legally blind in left eye and right one is getting old... Truly know what you are stuggling with. I have used both the model paints and nail polish for years. For me the flourescent green nail polish works best. But orange, red and white have all been helpful at times. If you have some color blindness issues as well you may find different backgrounds cause different colors to wash out. My daughter laughs every time I head for the clrearance nail polish section at Big Wally's... But now that she has become an avid pistol shooter she has gained a whole new appreciation for the "art". Experimentation is the path to enlightenment. At least it's not horribly expensive. Good luck!

Old Eyes

Many thanks for the input. It seems like I am not the only one with this problem! I have the white base coat and will try all of the above recommendations to see what works best for me. The orange sounds like a good start. Many thanks again.

My Browning BDA380 is nickel plated, and I have problems seeing the front sight. I paint the top surface with orange paint. It works for me.

Seems funny to be checking out the finger nail polish clearances but..... it works. Easy on, easy to remove. Lasts a long time. I've tried several colors but bright red on the front site seems to work best for me and sometimes I put a white outline on the rear site. The contrast between the two seems to help these old eyes.

Paint the entire ramp? Or where it aligns with the notch of the rear sight?
All have fixed sights but the front ramps are all very different on my 36-1, nickel 10-5 and 581.

For over 30 years I've "painted" the front sight with Yellow fingernail polish.

I still recall the day I purchased the first bottle at the K-Mart. The young lady really gave me the "look' when I stepped up to the cosmetics counter to pay for it, so, in those pre-PC days, I put on a little show for her that, I expect, solidified her belief that I was a bit, uhhhm... strange.

Well, I never claimed I was "right."

If it's a "woods" gun consider a bright green or some other alternative that isn't a natural color.;)

I paint the ramp down to the point I want to align with the bottom of the rear sight. That way if you haven't settled the front sight all the way down, it is apparent. Day glo orange over white. I think I have only redone my 642 front sight twice in 7 years.
