Based on the very few others in the database with 96xxx serial
numbers, I'd guess your 1957 estimate is correct.

Thank you. I'm no expert on S&W guns so I appreciate it. This gun was given to my great aunt new by her husband. After her death it went to my grandfather, then my mother, and now me. It is a family treasure. It also has the box and paperwork. Some cylinder finish wear but looks like it was rarely fired.

If you remove the stocks you should find the same serial number as
the one on the butt stamped into the inside of the right stock. The
number will also be handwritten on the bottom of the box in white
grease pencil.
Your Chiefs Special was made in the era when S&W stopped also
putting the serial number on the bottom of the barrel (you have to
roll out the cylinder to see it) and the back of the cylinder. Yours
may or may not have those serial numbers.
