Well ,I am headed to the doctor and I thought I would ask some advise and hopefully have an answer when I return later today.
I posted some time back concerning an old RCBL 5-10 scale.I did ask RCBS and was told they no longer handle these scales, which I already knew.
Does anyone know where I can get parts for this scale? The balance beam is broken in half and I need one.
Thank you!

Do you have a photo of the scale? Especially the copper damper. I have a beam, but there are different configurations.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

If RCBS still has the beam for the 10-10 scales, you can buy one of those and use it with your 5-10 scale. The only thing you will find different between the beams is the little hanger thing for the extra weight on the 10-10 scale. You will have to change the weight in the pan hanger to make it level out though. I know this because I have both scales and have actually used my 10-10 balance beam on my 5-10 base, along with the pan and pan holder.

Few years back my kitchen cabinet decided to fall off the wall. My 5-10 was on the counter, and it ended up with a broken balance beam. I called RCBS about buying a new one, and they rold me the scale would have to be recalibrated. They gave me a return authorization number and told me to ship it to Ohaus, in New Jersey.

They installed the new beam, recalibrated it, and shipped it back to me, all on RCBS' dime. My only cost was mailing it north.

Thank you all very much! I do not want to buy a complete scale right now.Leon, the photo that Alpo has shown is like my scale with the copper dampener screwed onto a projection that is 90 degrees from the arm with the dampener mounted parallel to the arm.I will ask Ohaus what they can do if anything, thanks again for all the help.

I can't see the shape of the copper part.

Ohaus scales are top notch in every way. Been using my old Ohaus 10-10 for over 40 years with complete satisfaction.

Well worth repairing, even if you have to pay Ohaus to do it for you.

If you can't repair it they show up on Ebay often, you might be able to buy a second one for parts. I have one and it is a nice scale.

Reliable as a Hammer

My old 5-10 looks its age (45 yrs) but works fine. Check weights are a waste of time, but make you feel better that gravity has not changed in 45 years. My only observation is that the beam does not readily come to the same index point unless I drum my fingers on the table, vibrating the beam a bit to make it settle out. Dirty, dusty bearings will make it sluggish. I do keep it out of drafts to keep the beam from wobbling in the breeze. Those plastic bearings and knife edges are not lab grade, but the scale is way more accurate than I need, and more trustworthy than one of the Chinese made electronic scales so popular these days.

Scale that old would have agate bearings...clean it and it'll work just like new probably

I use a simple scale test. Does a 50 grain .224 diameter bullet weigh 50 grains?

I weigh multiple powder charges 10 @4.4, 3 @16.5, or 1 @52.5 to verify powder measure setting. My 510 has plastic pivots in the body and a metal beam, 1975 vintage. It has weighed enough powder since 1975 to wear out 3 gun barrels.
