In Bisbee, Winchester's restaurant in the Copper Queen Hotel is reliably good, and a place called Cafe Roka gets high marks, but it's never been open when I've been in town. There's another restaurant opposite the mining museum, (name escapes me...) that's also surprisingly good for a tourist town. You have few choices in Tombstone, none rising above mediocre, the Longhorn is where I usually end up for dinner, although there's a restaurant associated with Best Western motel just north of town that's pretty good. While you're in the vicinity there are a few attractions well worth your attention --- the Gadsden Hotel in Douglas (which also has a pretty good restaurant) is a quaint architectural antique, worth a short drive from Bisbee, perhaps for lunch. I can't advise staying there, but it's worth a quick tour. Not far from Bisbee, just north of Whetstone, is one of AZ's natural wonders that rivals the Grand Canyon for "awesome" --- Karchner Caverns State Park. This is not just another musty cave tour --- it's a jaw dropping look at some of the most impressive cave features to be found anywhere in the world. There are two different tours --- take both if time and money permit.

You didn't ask about lodging, as mentioned in ridewv's next post, but in case you're interested, I think the best value in Bisbee is the Gym Club Suites, just around the corner a few yards from the Copper Queen. This "hotel" is actually a number of nicely furnished/furbished bright and airy apartments, with kitchens and utensils, etc., in most. Conveniently located in the center of town, it's very modestly priced, and a refreshing alternative to the "quaint" style endemic in Bisbee.

As long as you're in developed areas, your EDC hardware should afford adequate protection. Have fun!

Just returned last week from a ride to Arizona and New Mexico. We stayed right downtown in Bisbee at The Inn at Castle Rock.

We stayed in the “Geronimo room” (that’s him on the wall there). Pic with all our stuff there doesn’t look great but there is a king and queen bed in this room. Nice place and reasonable at $75. There is Wifi but no TV in the room, there’s a TV in the common lounge upstairs though.

That's funny - I can't even remember the last time I turned on the TV in a hotel. :) I do need my int3rwebz, tho. ;)

If you get to Tucson there is an International Wildlife Museum that is worth a visit. It is at 4800 W. Gates Pass Rd. Great place.

Where's John? I expect he'll offer up some tips and advice, and hopefully some beautiful photos, when he sees this thread!

Well, as has been noted here often before, Bisbee is our home away from home - my mother was born there, my grandparents and a cousin are buried there, and the old mining town looks pretty much as it did a century ago. We do have some favorite places to eat there. As the picture below will attest, I've been coming to Bisbee for a long, long time:

First, start with the old Copper Queen hotel. The restaurant there is no longer named Winchester's, but it's still pretty nice. Here's a shot of the hotel:

Here's the interior of the restaurant, and a pic of my favorite breakfast there, the eggs Benedict!

The bar in the Copper Queen is a great watering hole - I'm sure my grandfather tipped a few there!

For Mexican food, try Santiago's, just East of the Copper Queen in an adjacent building. Great bar there, too, with fantastic margaritas.

The Bisbee Grille, located in the old Mercantile building just South of the Copper Queen, has great fare - burgers and such. Ask for Laura Harvey, who runs the place, and tell her you know John who worked with her brother at Dillon - you'll be part of the family in no time.

A great place to sample beer is the Bisbee Brewing Company, located in the old brewery building in Brewery Gulch:

Another "rustic" watering hole is Saint Elmo's Bar, just up the road on Brewery Gulch on the West side:

Cafe Cornucopia, at 14 Main Street, is good for dropping in for a fast bite while shopping. A mom and pop shop.

Cafe Roka, mentioned here before, is open only on Fridays and Saturdays, I believe. This is the 4-star restaurant in Bisbee, and reservations are required. It's on Main street; call 520-432-6153 for reservations. The resident bar tender is an accomplished dude and makes great concoctions.

A new place in town, but highly recommended, is Screaming Banshee Pizza, located at 200 Tombstone Canyon Road, close to the famous Iron Man statue. If you like pizza, this is the place.

The best place for breakfast, hands down, is the Bisbee Breakfast club, located in Lowell, a small suburb of Bisbee. It's 1.4 miles down the road from the Copper Queen. On the drive down there, you will pass two gigantic open pit mines; immediately after passing the second one, turn right and you're there. Follow your nose, or ask any local.

Dot's Diner, just up the road from the BBC, is a mom and pop operation set up in an old railroad dining car. It's next to the Shady Dell Trailer Park - you can rent old trailers just like hotel rooms for the night, and it's a landmark. Located next to Evergreen Cemetery. Hot dogs and hamburgers - that sort of stuff.

Rosa's Little Italy, located across the road from the hospital in Warren, another suburb SE of Bisbee, has really first class Italian food. Highly recommended, and reservations are suggested. Call 520-432-1331.

Bisbee's a great place to visit - the places to eat are only part of the charm. A great place to kick back and relax, and to enjoy sights that have been around for a hundred years!

If you're going to Douglas first, and the logistics work out, spend the night in Lordsburg, NM, then drive down Hwy 80 toward Douglas about dawn. I've seen some pretty fantastic wildlife about that time of day. As others have said, keep your EDC on you and keep one eye open. You'll be fine. ;) Enjoy the trip!

ETA: Good grub is just like it is in Texas. Just look for the hole in the wall with lots of cars and pickups parked out front. That's the good place to eat.
