older model 38

Looking for assistance in identifying this revolver, My son just purchased it from a local gun shop.

By all indications according to the information it's a model 38 Smith & Wesson 38 special airweight.
The serial number 1J2XXXX

I'm trying to identify the year, But my Search has been somewhat unsuccessful.

Also trying to find an ankle holster for a left hand.

Looks like 1983-84.
I'd say that "MOD 38" stamped in the yoke cut qualifies as an "indication."
Google "left hand ankle holster" to find one. There are probably hundreds of companies selling them.

I too am looking to identify my Airwieght Bodyguard all the same marking in addition on the crane attached to the cylinder are the numbers 5638 and my S/N is 425JXX.
I don't know how Serial numbers on S&W are generated but seems like a big jump all for a 2 year period.
I appreciate the input so far as it might be getting me closer.

The OPs gun does not have a pinned barrel so it is likely a 1983 gun. Just before intro of the triple alpha serial numbers.

I use a Desantis ankle holster 044 S1 is what I use. It the only one I found that I really like.

Wheels999- that dates to 1971/1972 Floating J serial number period.

That is a beauty and look for a Galco Ankle Glove holster...you can find these quite reasonably and in my opinion they are the best and most comfortable out there

Your's is from the floating j period -- about 1971.

Well he will be very happy u do....i have had them for every ankle carry and tried a few others and I can say to me...they are the most comfortable even when the handgun is heavier like my kahr mk40 elite03 or my colt detective special...
You also do not get the movt from the gun when u walk too like some do...it glues it in place and makes it so simple to access and retain it...they make two versions for the j frame...one is the snap top and the other one has the retention screw and it is open top...had them both
I prefer the strap but either works very well ..it all depends on how well it fits with the gun in it
