There are two reloads possible in IDPA (see pg 41 of the rulebook).
There is no such thing as a one-handed reload requirement allowed in IDPA.
That was an illegal and unsafe stage description.

Some club matches-especially the ones that use the IDPA name but make up their own rules-are turning into carnival shoots.

Personally, I don't know much of anything about IDPA rules, but doing one-handed reloads in competition sure does sound unsafe.

But, one-handed reloads DO have their place. It comes under the subject of Handgun Tactics / Emergency Handgun Operations and should only be practiced SAFELY with dummy rounds.

Just 2 cents from a retired LEO.

Didnt know that it was illegal I glad that i learned how but i was concerned about one at a major match because its slow. semiautomatics isnt hard but a revolver is and its also dangerous

I'm not sure it's really dangerous. How dangerous can a revolver with an open cylinder be? But I can't think of any way you could do it within the gunhandling rules of IDPA or USPSA etc.

I don't know anything about IDPA, but we were familiarized with techniques for one-handed reloads of pistols - stick empty gun with slide locked back upside down between the knees, insert mag, remove from between the knees, drop slide, fire. We never practiced it formally at qualification (disaster waiting it happen), but were encouraged to practice it on our own. I did, and it is surprising how quickly it can be accomplished.

I suppose the same technique would work with a revolver, given enough barrel length. There may be other techniques but I haven't ever looked into them since I prefer to have a gun for each hand.

Safe, especially in a crowded range setting? No, but if it becomes necessary in a SD situation you are in a tight spot and you may as well be acquainted with it....preferably by practicing with dummy cartridges.

Open the cylinder and eject empties w/strong hand.
Turn the revolver around and put the barrel back in the holster.
(This will work in the waistband/belt if life or death emergency.)
Comp III's work best, insert and depress to load.
Close the cylinder, grab the butt and get to it.

thats what i did but you just broke the 180 rule if the gun tilts back. you also gotta watch sweeping your foot. It isnt dangerous till you put ammo in it. watch the sweep.

I agree, it was poor course design. However, it is a good thing to know how to reload a revolver, under stress, with one hand. Probably not the best place or time, during a match. Also, there is no 180 in IDPA. The match director establishes the muzzel safe zone. A revolver is safe with the cylinder fully loaded and unlatched. The cylinder does not get closed until a positive grip is established.
