First off - Happy Labor Day weekend!!! 10+ years ago on this forum I received a PM asking me what I thought an engraved 27-2 was worth. It was strikingly beautiful and factory engraved, but it was finished in a gray finish that was not factory applied. I cannot remember what I told him it was worth, but I recall telling him that it was a beautiful gun and that he should keep it. I really liked it and thought about it often.

Fast forward to a few years ago when Michael Kennelly's wonderful book Smith & Wesson Engraving was released I find this same gun on page 348 with a full photo spread and a description that the gun was contract engraved by Denise Thirion for the factory and the finish it now sports is "Antique Renaissance" a finish common on Brownings, but never seen by me on a Smith & Wesson. I once again remembered how much I really, really liked this .357 Magnum and I thought about it often.:)

Fast forward to a few months ago, when browsing one of my favorite for sale websites, I smiled as I saw it for sale. After a few phone calls and emails to the seller (along with a check), it arrived here in AZ. The 27-2 may have left the Factory on January 17, 1974 as a blued gun, but I am very grateful to the previous owner who had the vision to have the Antique Renaissance finish applied to this gun. It is spectacular and really shows off the flawless engraving!!:cool: In person I really, really, really like it and think about it often.:D

Here are a few photos for your enjoyment:

As always, I very much appreciate your thoughts and comments and as always, I would love for you to add photos of your engraved S&Ws to this (or any other) thread.:D

Thanks for letting me share,

Great story on a long lost love. 😎 perseverance paid off.
Very beautiful revolver, the finish makes it classy and a little different. You sure have a magnificent collection

That is a beautiful Model 27. There are often discussions on the Colt Forum regarding engraved Single Action Army's and what strikes me the most is how the guns with an antique Nickel finish always show off the engraving better than the ones that are bright Nickel.

The finish on the Denise Thiron gun, being similar to what was offered on the Browning Renaissance models perfectly illustrates my preference.

Richard, my sincere congratulations for that beautiful revolver that you add to your collection, the weapon looks incredible, it is wonderful, thanks for sharing, it is a pleasure to see the photos that you publish.

Beautiful model 27. Didn't Browning refer to it as "French Gray"? A buddy has a Browning Superposed O/U in "Diana" grade that looks very similar. Both yours and his are very drool worthy guns.

Very nice Richard, looks great! Looks not too different from French Grey, do you know what the difference is between the two? I suppose that is the finish that Browning used on the cased three gun sets from the '70s; a Hipower, a 380, and a 25 if I remember correctly.

Beautiful looking gun with a very unique finish. I like the red ramp / white outline sights too. Congratulations on adding it to your collection! 👍

Congratulations, very fine, I do not know the price, but if I bought, I speculate that I would be sleeping somewhere else from now on.

Great Caesar's Ghost Richard. You have such a beautiful collection and that one is superb.

I hope you will bring it to Glendale next June. I'd love to see it in person. Looking forward to visiting with you at the Symposium. I really, really missed you this year.
